๐While Atlantic puffins are typically monogamous and mate with the opposite s*x, same-s*x pairs can and do occur. In fact, over 130 different bird species have been documented pair-bonding, and co-parenting in dedicated, same-s*x partnerships.
๐The inspiration for this piece came from the Seattle Aquarium , where there are two female puffins named Gil and Gertie who been bonded for over five years. During mating season, Gil and Gertie engage in billing, a flirtatious move when puffins tap on each otherโs bills. They also gather materials to build a nest together and spend a lot of time with one another.
๐While puffins often return to the same mate, puffin couples like Gil and Gertie could also change in the future due to new social dynamics. Just like humans, animal relationships can change, too.
