Love restoring and maintaining these WWII hero’s. This Stearman came in for an Annual inspection, avionics upgrade and a couple other enhancements for safety. Finished it today and had to do the obligatory “test flight”, with a brief pose for a Glamour Shot. The smoke system was “tested“ at beautiful Flanders Field in central Florida. Ready for her to find its way back to Jacksonville so I can get back to working on the next Stearman restoration. It’s gonna be something special and never done before to my knowledge.

This pretty Stearman has spent the majority of its time since restoration down here in Florida (2006). It’s changed hands several times in the last couple years, but it’s finally leaving corrosive Florida for her new home in Michigan on Saturday. So, we have new jewelry to take with her by installing all new wing hardware and AN665 terminal ends. Also had to treat and repaint the interplane struts because of Filliform corrosion. Unfortunately, this is a bi-annual exercise when one lives in Florida with their biplane. Really fortunate to have my original WWII tensiometer to rig it back to specs. Don’t know how one would do this job properly without one.

Stearman progress present and future.

Yellow Navy Stearman will be flying and back home in it’s hangar this Summer. Freshly overhauled 300 Lycoming and constant speed propeller on this one. Assembly is always fun. Navy Stearman in middle has been a ”work in progress” for a couple of years now. Owners are now ready for it so full steam ahead and hope to have her flying by Christmas. Poor Army Stearman at the end had a run in with a Lake. Wings are being built for it now by Yesteryear Aviation. Those will be done by early Summer. And finally, no job is too big or too small for Waldo. Have to assemble and “rig” number 111. She’ll look might fine in my office.

Opportunity...came knocking on my door last week. I was asked by the new owner of this gorgeous custom Stearman to ferry it from Minnesota to Arkansas. Mother Nature dealt me a decent window to make the trip this past weekend, but it was oh so cold (38 degrees). “Pure power“ is all I can say with 450 horsepower up front...what a treat! A special thank-you to Brian and Rachelle Aukes who graciously provided a warm hangar for her to sleep in. She got injured in a tornado years ago and it is time to repair that damage. Hopefully this “Beast of an Airplane” should be back up flying this Summer. I know the new owner can’t wait.

WALDO UPDATE- May 6, 2021- After review of the current environment, while things are most certainly getting better, they are not yet sustainable for our flight operations. Waldo would like to let you know there is NO threat to our business, and our restoration work is continuing to keep us going until we can open again for flights. We will re-evaluate our potential to open in January 2022. For those of you with outstanding gift certificates, please hold on to them, as they never expire. We can’t wait to get back in the air, and look forward to the happy hugs and smiling faces that usually accompany each and every flight. Be well, be safe, and thank you for your continued patience. Waldo Friends and Family,
As an update, we wanted you to know just how much we have appreciated the phone calls, flight reservation requests, and ongoing support of our open cockpit biplane ride business.

Today, we would like to announce that we are moving forward in the next immediate months with the restoration side of our business plan. We have taken on Vintage Restoration clients, and are focusing our business efforts on the restoration of open cockpit biplanes, which is a much more reliable means given the current state of affairs.

WE ARE NOT CLOSING SHOP TO FLYING OPPORTUNITIES.

This is a temporary reassignment of our energies. We look forward to many future years of open cockpit biplane rides, and are increasing the size of our fleet during this time as well to be better equipped to take all of our enthusiastic patrons for future experiences in these vintage planes.

We thank you all for your patronage, and appreciate your patience as we manage our sustainability.
