WildSpring Guest Habitat, Port Orford.

We left the RV at home and took a drive down the Oregon Coast to Port Orford.

The best word to describe this place is.... Whimsical. If you are looking for "unique" this is the right place for you. It starts at arrival where you park, grab a key, and use a cart to take your belongings on a short walk into the woods. The cabins are close proximity to each other but are situated in a way that allows privacy. The guest cabins are thoughtfully decorated and equipped with plenty of extra like a wine opener, a lighter for candles, plush bath robes. The romantic ambiance is easily set if that is your goal.

Another short walk up a trail leads to the Guest Hall which is a comfy setting with an amazing view of the ocean. Here you will find a full kitchen at your disposal complete with cookware, spices, and some common items in the fridge. Share a meal in the spacious setting or out on the deck. When you head back to your cabin don't forget to check out the extensive DVD collection. We found everything from classics like "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" to popular Rom-Com and new releases. We borrowed several 80's classics that we hadn't seen in forever! The DVD collection can be found in the bathroom, which might sound weird but you will see when you get here that there is no space wasted in this thoughtful eco-friendly lodge. While in the bathroom be sure to check out the sink. Another detail of imaginative whimsy that depicts the creativity of the owner. Oh, do not forget to flip through a table book that recounts the history of WildSpring. It is a story filled with romance, dreams, and heartache that includes pictures of life realized.

And, I cannot forget the attraction of the spa and gazebo! Set amidst the trees and driftwood sits an open air hot tub overlooking the tree line and ocean. The truly amazing thing is that it requires an appointment, meaning it's not overcrowded, you get the luxury of enjoying the relaxing experience sans strangers. It's a simple text to the host to check for availability for an hour soak. Other amenities are EV charging, radiant heated floors, roomy shower, a decent continental breakfast spread, and priceless peace and quiet amidst the old growth forest.

The whimsy of the place comes with the decor spread through the walking paths. Hidden among ferns are sculptures, a walking labyrinth, meditation alcoves, creations of all sorts. Everywhere you look is a whimsical touch that makes you feel the great pride and artistic talents of the owner. It's awe inspiring if you take the time to appreciate it.

One thing to note: not a great place to get work done, although I'm not sure why anyone would want to. There is wifi, but we found that most of the time it wasn't enough service to even send a text message. But, we were cool with that! This is a place to enjoy being unplugged.

We have stayed here twice. In the same cabin, by chance, and have loved it. This last time, in October, we had the place to ourselves in the middle of a classic coastal storm. The wind howled at the Guest Hall and we stood and howled with it. We also got the privilege of thunder and lightning that rolled off the cliffs and gave a haunting view of the forest and sea. Truly magnificent!

So, the “shakedown” first trip in our impromptu purchase exceeded our expectations. Not only did the RV hold up with only a few things added to the “fix list” but our first Harvest Host experience was just what we needed.

Freed Eastate Winery in Oregon’s Umpqua Valley was a gracious host.

We picked a spot to park next to the river and enjoyed an evening stroll in the vineyard after our wine flight tasting. Hearing the history of the Freed family and its wine creates a family atmosphere that makes visitors feel at home. Not stodgy and formal like other tasting rooms. We briefly met Brian on his way out and enjoyed the company of his wife Crissy as she poured. When you stop in, ask to see the impressive picture’s of Pam and her big fish!

Our wine flights were generous and snack plates were a delicious portion of cheese cubes, hard salami, and macadamia nuts. We finished our plates and wine and spent an additional hour mulling around the artisan gifts and art for purchase and sharing stories with other tasters and RV’rs.

We appreciate the “Aloha” spirit we felt while visiting and would recommend to others who are looking for a laid back family atmosphere and a quiet space to stay on their journey.

P.S. we purchased a bottle of the Rose Wine 2024 and highly recommend it!

When I emotionally shop I end up with three new jackets. When Brendon emotionally shops he finds an amazing deal on a RV. Yes, we still have our Transvan that we are slowly renovating…. But we needed to get out of town whenever life gets overwhelming, which is a lot right now. So, today we take our first voyage in our new-to-us 1985 Minnie Winnie.

We are heading to our first Harvest Host destination not far from our home for some much needed space.

While this RV is in great condition for its age, it has a lot of cosmetic and upgrading that could be done. I’ll be starting at the back in the bathroom…whatcha think?

It has been one heck of a wet winter here on the Oregon coast… great for water levels and green grass but not great for remodeling an RV. But, there was a tiny break of sun and I took advantage of it. Tore out some paneling and shelving and a Cheeto that may be ten years old and not even a sign of mold or stale… Cheetos may last longer than twinkies? Good apocalypse knowledge to store for later.

Brendon made up our initial ideas of EthelKay’s remodel.

Some cool personalized features include:

-hidden pop up vanity so I have personal space for makeup, jewelry, hair products, etc.

-“catio” for Evie. This is a built in slide out that allows Evie the ability to scope the out of doors when we are parked.

- a small hydroponic set up so I can continue growing fresh lettuce and herbs while we drive along. It would have grow lights and the ability to be moved out of doors when we are parked.

If you were to be in the road for a long period of time, what is something you couldn’t live without?

You know when you have late night talks about things that would be crazy to do, and you have crazy ideas and make crazy plans but in the back of your mind you’re like….”yeah, never going to happen because that’s crazy ”…..until it does happen?

We need a new project like a hole in the head…but this fell in our lap and matched our crazy.

Say hello to Ethel Kay…our…. 1981 Transtar Chevy Van that is going to get gutted and remodeled. Crazy, I know.

Any other TransVan’ers out there?
