Stewarding the evolution of an artist’s legacy through a new voice.

I’m honored and deeply grateful to help facilitate the transition of Justin’s craft to his son, Jameson. The legacy of a Kankula crafting the tap handles for one of this town’s proudest success stories lives on. Continuing a tradition rooted in craftsmanship, family, and community.

Upon dropping off new tap handles for , in collaboration with Jameson from , I was greeted by this awesome vista.

Today, we celebrate the life of Justin Kankula.
Justin was a dear friend to me and my family—his presence brought humor, kindness, and lasting memories into our lives. It was my absolute honor and privilege to create his urn, a small token of the deep respect and love we hold for him.

Celebration of life: June 1st at 4:30pm at

The urn is a walnut segmented vase composed of about 185 different pieces.

Thanks .shop for providing a brass collar

Below is an excerpt from the dedication of the “Justin Kankula Woodworking Shop”. Read the full post at the link below :

I met Justin in 2018. He was just beginning his business. At the time, he was transitioning out of construction and had this dream—this spark—to make fine woodworking items. I remember him saying, “I want to make furniture like that.” He
pointed at a piece, and you could hear the conviction in his voice.

Justin dove in. He became a cornerstone of Mixxer—not just a craftsman, but a collaborator, a learner, a helper, a friend. He brought laughter, support, and his whole self to this community. He learned. He grew. And he built something beautiful. He didn’t just succeed in his craft—he built a thriving business, one that grew from that early vision into something truly remarkable. He helped others along the way, and his presence made this place better.
Justin is the personification of what Mixxer stands for—mastery of craft, a spirit of community, and the drive to create something meaningful.

And with that, we are happy to announce that we are naming the woodworking shop in Justin’s honor. From now on, the woodworking shop here at Mixxer will be called the Justin Kankula Woodworking Shop.

We know that this space will carry forward his spirit. With all the energy, passion, and support that Justin brought into this place, we believe the shop bearing his name will continue to inspire.

We know this space will produce many success stories like Justin’s—stories of people who need a place to work, to relax, or to simply commune with their friends. We hope to offer all of that and more, right here at Mixxer.

By naming the Justin Kankula Woodworking Shop, we get closer to that mission—
by honoring one of the most profound success stories we’ve had in Winston Salem.

Who would’ve thought milling your own lumber would be so much fun. Just been running through a few “test” logs before I start cutting the good stuff. Still just as satisfying.

Fanback arm chair. Arguably the most comfortable Windsor chair in my opinion. I finished painting this one recently, but admittedly it has seen use before I got pictures of it. So ignore the yogurt stains from a house of sticky fingers.

Love the black over red paint job. It is the color my dining set will be and this is the first chair that was made for that set.

Finally painted the rocking chair. I started with blue but wasn’t a fan of the final color. Therefore, I put a layer of black over it. Decently happy with the final product. I think I will stay away from blues from now on.
