This is the Way: A Study in Maps
Featured Artist: Christina Lemon

In her Cascading Squares Mokume-gane Earrings, exhibiting artist Christina Lemon transforms an ancient metalsmithing technique into a contemporary exploration of landscape and movement.

Mokume-gane, which translates to "wood grain metal," originated in 18th-century Japan as a method for creating decorative elements on Samurai swords. By laminating and manipulating contrasting metals, metalsmiths developed flowing patterns that reveal intricate layers beneath the surface.

For these earrings, Christina uses sterling silver and copper mokume-gane to create patterns that evoke topographical maps, winding waterways, and aerial views of streets and pathways. The naturally repeating lines guide the eye across the surface, much like a map invites us to trace routes, connections, and journeys.

Through a centuries-old process, Christina's work offers a modern interpretation of the landscapes and pathways that shape how we navigate the world.

A curated release of gently lived-in ceramics by Clyde Gobble. These pieces carry subtle signs of their journey, from small chips and fine cracks to light wear, adding character rather than taking it away. Each item is fully functional and uniquely individual. Nothing here is mass-perfect, and that is the point. This collection is for those who appreciate history, texture, and a little imperfection at the table.

This is the Way: A Study in Maps
Featured Artists: Julie & Tyrone Larson

For exhibiting artists Julie and Tyrone Larson, the mountains of Western North Carolina are more than a landscape, they are a lifelong source of inspiration and stewardship.

Julie's "Strata Pots" draw from the layered beauty of geologic formations, rock stratifications, mineral deposits, and mountain upheavals. Her fascination with the natural patterns revealed in mountainsides and road cuts began decades ago and continues to shape her work today. In this newest series, she expands that exploration to include the trees and foliage that define the region's distinctive ridgelines.

The work is also deeply connected to place. After moving to the Penland area in 1971, Julie and Tyrone joined fellow craftspeople in advocating for protections against large-scale development on mountain ridges. Their efforts helped establish Mitchell County's Ridge Line Laws, preserving the very landscapes that continue to inspire their art.

*This is the Way: A Study in Maps* explores the idea that maps are more than tools for navigation. They are records of memory, identity, movement, and meaning.

Inspired by cartography in all its forms, from topographical lines and celestial charts to family histories and "maps of the heart," this exhibition reimagines mapping as both art and storytelling. The featured works invite viewers to reflect on the routes we travel, the connections we forge, and the journeys that shape who we are.

Join us as artists chart paths through real and imagined landscapes, revealing that finding our way is about much more than reaching a destination.
