Our city of Winston-Salem, NC experienced a profound tragedy yesterday. The ripple effects felt near and far are powerful reminders of our collective trauma on this earth. Emotions remain high. The image you see pictured is of a community of tiny butterflies we saw on a last minute trip this summer. We arrived at our destination and ran towards the water, only to find a swarm of these butterflies around the corner. One of them fell shortly after we arrived. Rather than continue their flight, these three butterflies entered this space like they are pictured, one by one. The first two walked toward one another until their wings touched and embraced for a few moments before the third arrived. They stood over their fallen friend, and for an entire half hour, performed what could only be seen in our human eyes as a transitioning ceremony. When they separated, we could see the tiny round gift they placed on their friend.

Together, and separately in our lives together, we have experienced profound tragedies and spent too many days grief-stricken. We found comfort in this moment this day. We felt taken care of by our ancestors, and moved to tears. We were intensely reminded of our own grieving ceremonies through the years. We felt embraced by nature and a unique camaraderie with these butterflies.

We hope you will find the same in this image and story this evening as well, a sign from nature that we have to care for each other in this life, through the end. It is our hope tonight that in our collective grief, our community will lean on one another for recovery, healing, and transformation.

We are thinking of our family and friends whose lives were changed forever yesterday, and extending compassion, outrage, sadness and love to all impacted by the violence that we must never stop working to end.

Finally, we keep in our hearts the child who lost his life, and say his name: William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr.

These are some of our favorite first photos of Occupy WSNC. We refer to this as “an anomaly” often. This collective action began a year ago today; we will never forget showing up in downtown, WS, NC not knowing what to expect. From that day forward, the most authentically loving, caring and fierce individuals have entered our lives. This day is marked forever in our memories, as we remain aware of the reasons that the 49-day occupation of a park became necessary; John Neville did not deserve to lose his life the way he did. We have been touched deeply by the way has honored the Neville family and built and nurtured trust through Occupy and beyond.

The dedication to truth, community care and energy we have seen since this day a year ago has only made us stronger and more determined activists, artists, abolitionists and humans. In the last year, we have engaged in a process of accountability and healing that has absolutely rocked our universe in every way, creating the growth that we have learned is necessary for us to continue our journeys. We have found the beauty in the chaos of change and the wisdom in spaces that allow growth versus spaces that inhibit it. We have paused for rest, and learned self-compassion. We did not know this would be the journey that we would enter into when we stepped into Bailey Park a year ago today. We could not have anticipated the levels of joy, grief, connection, or the sense of community that we would experience. We thank everyone who continues to meet us where we are.

, we have immense gratitude for the dedication, time and care with which you have allowed us to walk in solidarity with you, starting a year ago today. Thank you for every moment. Happy Occupyversary!!

Like so many of you, we had no idea what 2020 would bring. As 2019 ended, we had hope for our future. We got hit hard in January 2020 with two profound losses, and we were not spared in 2021 from a similar fate. After two tumultuous years that stretched us to our maximum capacities, we found ourselves on unsteady ground with a plethora of undefined emotions.

All along, we remained determined to keep our connection, connected. Part of that process has been accomplished through reimagining justice through abolition and the internal work it requires. We cannot continue expecting progress from a system built upon oppression and slavery. In our absence, we have been honoring our individual and combined journeys with the understanding and experience that community care is our only hope for forward motion.

We have been intentional in our stepping back; we have learned that radical acceptance and accountability must come before ego, fear or force if we are to truly realize our human potential. As we move forward, we will keep working toward a world without police where our communities can truly be safe.

We have immense gratitude for the ways we have been embraced by our community during this time. To those who have helped us to realize we are stronger than we knew, we extend our deepest gratitude. You know who you are, near and far. Thank you to those who model rest and boundaries for us. Thank you especially to for embracing us on our journey; it is an honor to stand alongside you. So much of the art of USOR is driven now by TAP’s passion and dedication; the ways they allow space for and nurture the collective knowledge of our community continues to amaze us. created this flyer; we hope you will explore the workshop and that those who are local will apply.

Finally, we stand with the families of all of our siblings who have died at the hands of the carceral state. Justice must be re-imagined in their names: Daunte Wright, George Floyd, Adam Toledo, Breonna Taylor, Tamir Rice, Elijah McLean, Eric Garner, John Neville and countless others.

The numbers on these slides are no longer accurate...the FCDC now has the highest cumulative positive Covid-19 cases in North Carolina at 285. According to The Winston Salem Journal (1/26/21), that number includes 234 inmates and 51 staffers.

This outbreakis incredibly harmful to our community and is the result of a lack of accountability. What can you do to increase accountability?

It is PAST that time! this deplorable human being has been feeding the beast for the past four years, and yesterday the beast grew out of control and into DC where displays of hate and bigotry were displayed in glorious American fashion!! We expected nothing less from such a vile human being to incite such chaos at our nation’s capitol on this great Stolen Land.

Consider yourself called to ACT!!! And do whatever is possible to publicly and formally in whatever way NECESSARY to send a message to the white supremacist BEASTS among us that we WILL NOT TOLERATE THIS ANOTHER DAY!!!!

We will not stop believing that humans are better than THIS!

We will NOT succumb to our own fears and forget those, even the oppressors who do not see their oppression, who suffer far more than us in their denial of blatant reality they have been taught to see through a white lens!!!

We STAND proudly and without fear with those who strengthen and strive to make us all! SAFE! thank you for your fuel, your collective voice and for inspiring this graphic in your efforts to defund the police STATE, examine the kind of state-sanctioned violence we witnessed yesterday and dismantle the grip of white supremacy on our fellow brothers and sisters and every single one of those in between! 💯

Thank you for this invaluable graphic, knowledge and reminder.

“When HORRIFIC INJUSTICE takes place,
We won’t be overtaken by SHOCK & CONFUSION, as if the fruit of systemic oppression is surprising.
Our EMOTIONAL RESPONSE will be marked by empathy & compassion,
Leading to a rejection of PERFORMATIVE ALLYSHIP in exchange for the real, vigorous work.
And, should GUILT & FATIGUE try to settle in, we’ll recenter the needs of those yearning for liberation,
Remembering that INACTION & PASSIVITY are detrimental to justice,
And that APATHY is the antithesis of unconditional love.”

📢📢📢 In the past week, the covid cases in the FCDC have gone from 4 staff members to 37 inmates and 11 staff today. The jail is on lockdown for the next couple of days and the courts are not open for people to have their hearings leaving them vulnerable to this deadly disease during a time of uncontrolled spread.

1. Halt Arrests to prevent bringing new cases in and overcrowding the jail
2. Release low-level offenders, the elderly, and people with health conditions
3. End the contract with the deadly healthcare provider Wellpath

Repost

We stand with you!

“We stand in solidarity with our comrades protesting for housing justice! Safe shelter and healthcare are the rights of the people. If you are able, show up at the Government Center tomorrow at 2pm. If you want to participate, but are afar, have your voice heard in the public session! County commissioners have the power to pressure FCSO, as well as to cut their budget in order to reallocate funds from policing & punishment to community care, housing assistance, and public health.” @ Winston-Salem, North Carolina
