Our city of Winston-Salem, NC experienced a profound tragedy yesterday. The ripple effects felt near and far are powerful reminders of our collective trauma on this earth. Emotions remain high. The image you see pictured is of a community of tiny butterflies we saw on a last minute trip this summer. We arrived at our destination and ran towards the water, only to find a swarm of these butterflies around the corner. One of them fell shortly after we arrived. Rather than continue their flight, these three butterflies entered this space like they are pictured, one by one. The first two walked toward one another until their wings touched and embraced for a few moments before the third arrived. They stood over their fallen friend, and for an entire half hour, performed what could only be seen in our human eyes as a transitioning ceremony. When they separated, we could see the tiny round gift they placed on their friend.
Together, and separately in our lives together, we have experienced profound tragedies and spent too many days grief-stricken. We found comfort in this moment this day. We felt taken care of by our ancestors, and moved to tears. We were intensely reminded of our own grieving ceremonies through the years. We felt embraced by nature and a unique camaraderie with these butterflies.
We hope you will find the same in this image and story this evening as well, a sign from nature that we have to care for each other in this life, through the end. It is our hope tonight that in our collective grief, our community will lean on one another for recovery, healing, and transformation.
We are thinking of our family and friends whose lives were changed forever yesterday, and extending compassion, outrage, sadness and love to all impacted by the violence that we must never stop working to end.
Finally, we keep in our hearts the child who lost his life, and say his name: William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr.
