Appalachian Omens, Signs, and Folklore

Death has always carried its own language in Appalachia.
In the first hour of this one-day seminar, we’ll explore historical Appalachian omens, signs, beliefs, and folklore connected with death and the dead. Through talk and discussion, we’ll look at the ways Appalachian communities interpreted dying, death, mourning, burial, and the presence or memory of those who had passed.
During the second hour, we’ll shift into a modern Appalachian perspective on remembrance, ancestor connection, and Samhain.
Each participant will create an ancestor card suitable for placing on an altar, remembrance space, or other meaningful place. You do not need to know your family tree to participate. Materials will be provided, and the activity will leave plenty of room for individual beliefs, family circumstances, and personal practice.
