With GOD Crew Inc. (WGC) is now accepting essays for the Annual Jane D. Penn Creative Arts Scholarship

To honor the late Jane D. Penn, WGC presents an annual creative arts scholarship. Ms. Penn was a Winston-Salem native who tirelessly served the local community, church, and school system. She believed in people’s ability to change their own community and volunteered as a founding member of With GOD Crew Inc.

Amount: $700
Deadline: 8/1/2023

Eligibility:

•Deserving undergraduate student
•Able to provide proof of enrollment at a North Carolina college/university
•Open age criteria

Criteria:

•Submit a one page, single-space essay to [email protected] answering the following prompt:

Once you obtain your degree, what will you do to push your community forward?

***Money will be awarded at the WGC Truth and Love Giveaway on August 12th***

My mother Rosalee worked at the Export Leaf To***co Company in Winston-Salem, NC and enjoyed her seasonal work even though it was hard. Mom always wore a starched apron and colorful kerchief (head wrap) to match. The apron present in the first line of That’s Mamma represented her job and the love for her eight children. Rosalee’s spirit is woven through-out the poem which makes it special. Whether it’s blessing the food when there wasn’t any or giving the all of herself.

The poem, That’s Mamma was birthed out of the need to share love to my mom and it has become so much more. I remembered Mother’s Day was soon approaching and I wanted to create a special gift for my mother Rosalee. Since I am a writer, I thought about all the things she was to me and the poem started from there. I thought about her character: Rosa was loving, hard-working, caring and spiritual person. So, I started putting the poem together line by line until I constructed a poem That’s Mamma, that represented who she was.
