It’s been a while since I’ve added an original mono Blue Note pressing to the collection.

I picked up this first pressing of Groovin’ at Small’s Paradise, Volume 2 by Jimmy Smith from a Whatnot auction recently, and the price was too good to pass up.

One fun thing I enjoy about collecting is bringing together records that belong side by side. I already had Volume 1 through the Classic Vinyl Series reissue, so it feels good to add this original mono copy of Volume 2 next to it on the shelf.

Jimmy Smith, Eddie McFadden, and Donald Bailey captured some magic at Small’s Paradise, and this one is sounding great today.

Thanks to for this one.. I always find some fun stuff in his auctions. 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Taking a brief break from the jazz records. While checking out an international festival with my family, we stumbled across The Jolly Pop and decided to try some of their dirty sodas. I went with the green apple version, and on a hot North Carolina afternoon it absolutely hit the spot!

Refreshing, creative, and a lot of fun. If you happen to run across at an event in North Carolina, they’re definitely worth checking out! 😋

Anyone else a fan of dirty sodas?

It’s a beautiful Sunday morning. I have quite a few new arrivals to listen to today and this week, but I decided to start the day with a classic.

Bill Evans’ Trio ’65 is on the turntable, and the coffee is poured. A pretty good way to spend a Sunday morning. 🎶☕️✌🏻

This warm, summer-like weather has me craving some funky ’70s jazz. ☀️🎶

So now it’s Donald Byrd’s Places and Spaces on the turntable. Between the grooves, the atmosphere, and that unmistakable Mizell Brothers production, this one feels like the perfect soundtrack for a sunny Saturday.

Saturday morning. The windows are cracked open, the birds are singing, and the coffee is hot. A pretty good setting for a first listen. ☕🎶

I’ve been aware of Leroy Vinnegar for years, and he’s appeared on plenty of albums in my collection, but somehow I’ve never owned one under his own name until now.

So this morning, Leroy Walks! gets its first spin on my turntable. Looking forward to spending some time with this one.

Fun fact : outside of jazz circles, Leroy also played acoustic bass on “Spanish Caravan” from The Doors’ Waiting for the Sun.

Have you heard this album?

It felt more like summer than spring today, but with a few weeks of spring still left on the calendar, I figured I should get Spring on the turntable at least once before the season is over. ☀️🎶☕

This Anthony Williams album sits a little outside my usual jazz comfort zone, but every now and then the mood is just right for it. And with Wayne Shorter, Sam Rivers, Herbie Hancock, and Gary Peacock along for the ride, there’s always something interesting happening.

Not an everyday listen for me, but one I’m always glad to revisit!

Beautiful day for some Curtis Amy. ☀️🎶☕

We’ve now gotten three Curtis Amy Tone Poet releases from Blue Note: Katanga!, Groovin’ Blue, and the newly released Tippin’ On Through.

I’ve enjoyed all three, and I really appreciate Joe Harley for selecting these titles for the series and introducing me to Amy’s music (and to other great titles that were originally released by Pacific Jazz)!

Which one is your favorite?

Beautiful Friday morning, and I couldn’t think of a better way to start the day than with Embalo by Tenório Jr.

I first discovered this album last year after it was recommended to me, and it has become one of those records I find myself returning to again and again. Originally released in 1964 and reissued by - it blends Brazilian rhythms and jazz in a way that feels effortless, sophisticated, and endlessly inviting.

A little coffee, some sunshine, and Brazilian jazz to start the day. Hard to ask for much more. 🎶☕️🇧🇷

Beautiful Thursday morning. ☀️🎶☕

I’ve always enjoyed the releases from New Land Records, and they just teased that they’ll have some new titles coming later this year. Can’t wait!.

In the meantime, I pulled out their excellent reissue of Jazz Contrasts by Kenny Dorham.

Recorded in 1957, this session features an interesting lineup including Sonny Rollins, Hank Jones, Oscar Pettiford, and Max Roach, along with jazz harpist Betty Glamann on several tracks. The addition of a harp gives the album a unique texture that helps it stand apart from many hard bop sessions of the era.

And with the recent passing of Sonny Rollins, revisiting records like this now carries a little extra weight as well.

always does a beautiful job: Kevin Gray mastering directly from the original mono tapes, pressing at Pallas, and an insert featuring photos, notes, and new reflections from Sonny Rollins himself.

A wonderful album, a beautiful reissue, and a great way to start the day.
