“Gordon C***s: Gidibaajimomin / We Tell Stories” is a vibrant and captivating exhibition of Woodland Style art inspired by regional Ojibwa rock paintings, petroglyphs, historic birch bark drawings, and oral traditions. Through bold imagery and rich symbolism, Gordon C***s shares his unique interpretation of traditional Native stories and cultural teachings.

His striking use of color carries geographic and seasonal significance, while bold outlines and interconnected lines represent communication, power, and the relationships that connect all living things. Each work invites viewers to explore layers of meaning rooted in Indigenous knowledge and storytelling.

Gordon also encourages visitors to view his artwork through traditional red-and-blue 3D glasses, revealing dramatic shifts in color and making the intricate lines appear to leap from the surface. Experiencing this already dynamic exhibition through a different lens (quite literally) adds another dimension to the artwork and creates a memorable visual experience for visitors of all ages.

“Gordon C***s: Gidibaajimomin / We Tell Stories” will be on view through August 30.

One of the most historically captivating exhibitions currently on view at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum is "The Coast and the Sea: Marine and Maritime Art in America". Since opening on March 14, this traveling exhibition organized by The New York Historical has quickly become a visitor favorite.

Featuring more than 50 marine and maritime artifacts drawn from an expansive collection, this exhibition brings America’s maritime past vividly to life. The exhibition traces America’s evolving relationship with water from 1750 to 1904. Along the way, guests will encounter works by some of the country's most celebrated marine and portrait artists, including Thomas Birch, Thomas Buttersworth, Jasper Francis Cropsey, John Frederick Kensett, Edward Moran, Rembrandt Peale, Howard Pyle, and Francis Augustus Silva.

Whether you're drawn to history, adventure, or breathtaking art, “The Coast and the Sea: Marine and Maritime Art in America” offers a fascinating journey through the waters that helped define America.

Happy National Mississippi River day from the Minnesota Marine Art Museum!

Located on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, MMAM’s visitors, volunteers, and staff are lucky enough to enjoy the museum’s beautiful 7-acre riverside campus.
A few weeks ago, the Mississippi, along with its passing barges and tugboats, served as the perfect subject matter during MMAM’s New Look Weekend. The incomparable Nelia Harper French (Nelia Harper Art) led a wonderful three-hour plein air paint-along on our riverwalk, guiding participants through the creative process while exploring the “light effect” that is so essential to painting outdoors.

Despite hours of bright sunshine, participants embraced the challenge and created stunning works that captured the unique beauty of the Mississippi River with its flowing waters, working vessels, dramatic bluffs, and vibrant gardens. Their paintings reflected not only the landscape before them, but also the enduring inspiration that this iconic river provides.

Today, we celebrate the Mississippi River’s history, beauty, and impact on the communities that line its shores. Thank you to this incredible river for inspiring artists, connecting people, and enriching life here in Winona and beyond.

Happy National Mississippi River Day! ❤
