For our final Water Music performance of the season,Alan Dunbar will be performing three works that were written for him. He will be joined by Erik Rohde, Ruth Marshall, Dan Sheridan, and Deanne Mohr.

These performances include two new pieces that were premiered just last month at Winona State. The program consists of:

- Finding Home (2026) by Timothy Takach - settings of poetry by James Joyce for baritone and cello. These four songs are beautifully intimate and lyrical, and create a wonderful dialogue between the cello and the voice parts.

- Selections from Pharaoh Songs (2017) by Libby Larsen - Libby wrote these settings of ancient Egyptian love poems for Alan as a part of the 2017 Minnesota Source Song Festival. The songs are a delightful combination of slightly creepy poetry and absolutely exquisite music!

- For the Trees (2025) by Scott Gendel - settings of poetry by Robert Frost for “guitar-playing baritone, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano." This one is particularly exciting as it blurs boundaries between the many styles of music that I enjoy - art song, chamber music, folk music, jazz, and more. It really defies description, so you'll just have to come hear it yourself!

Tickets can be purchased through the MMAM website - get them today!

MMAM is pleased to present “Water Music: The Coast and the Sea” in partnership with the Winona Symphony Orchestra for the last concert in the 2026-26 season this Thursday, April 16. This performance takes inspiration from the exhibition on loan from The New York Historical, “The Coast and the Sea: Marine and Maritime Art in America,” and will feature Alan Dunbar. Two concerts will be presented (4:30pm and at 7:00pm), with a reception in the MMAM atrium in between the two concerts.

American Public Media’s Composers Datebook is a daily podcast that notes significant events in the lives of composers. Today’s podcast (about two minutes) observes the birthday, 150 years ago, of WSO’s founding music director Carl Ruggles and it begins with the opening of Ruggles’ most famous work, Sun-Treader, performed by the Cleveland Orchestra. Enjoy!
