Lynne Buchanan (Lynne Buchanan) is a lens-based artist based in Western North Carolina. Her work explores her intimate connection to the natural world and how her perceptions of biodiversity in the environment influence her philosophy of life.

In her Photography Atelier 40 project, Buchanan turns her lens to her family life, creating a series of mixed-media photographs that transform family archives into meditations on the missing gaps of memory, inheritance, belief and intergenerational dialogue.Combining imagery with botanical fragments, text, and layered interventions, she explores the fragile intersections of personal history and collective identity.

The first of 24 interviews with the artists in our annual outdoor summer exhibition, 𝘝𝘐𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯(𝘢𝘳𝘺) 2026 𝘡𝘪𝘯𝘦 #1: 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘗𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 is a deep dive into the aftermath of Trump’s reelection.

Peterson’s work aims to capture a tumultuous time before it is forgotten. He shares: “Often the beginning of change happens in the streets and I want to show the leaders and vanguard of these movements which often are ignored or dismissed at the beginning by mainstream media.”

On view: Robert J. Birnbaum: Soon I Will Know Who I Am

Exploring the challenges of family relations, Robert J. Birnbaum’s photographs are imbued with a sense of questioning and longing, but also with the power of photography to create harmony and meaning in one’s life.

“My life has challenged me to harmonize opposing forces: the discord that exists between ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ experience, emotion and physicality, chaos and order, my mother, and my father.

My camera is my beacon, a life preserver illuminating metaphors that educate and console me. I press the shutter and the images that appear somehow enable me to survive and prosper.”

On View: Vivid Splash by Julia Levites Julia Levites

“I began searching for color in the world around me, and then, gradually, creating it. Color changed the way I experienced familiar places and ordinary objects. Walls, doors, shadows, reflections, and small fragments of everyday life became charged with possibility. The more I followed color, the more it opened a different way of seeing and gave me access to a creativity I had not expected to find.

In Vivid Splash, color becomes both subject and guide. My figure appears throughout the work as a shadow, reflection, silhouette, or blur, never fully fixed but always present. These partial self-portraits become a way of entering the image and merging with the color, light, and space around me.

Together, the photographs invite the viewer into a world where color heightens attention, shifts perception, and awakens a sense of wonder.”

Now on view in our Main Gallery

West of Thirty-Five by Andrew Lee Jennings (Andrew Lee Jennings) presents photographs of the American West captured in areas west of Interstate 35.

He reflects: “Often without a destination in mind, I seek out new roads and unique perspectives by following my intuition and curiosity. And scattered throughout this frontier I discover evidence of long-lost kindred spirits alongside their modern-day stalwarts attempting to carry on their traditions.”

Through his project, Jennings explores places that feel connected to the past, using his camera to show that the West is a place full of contrasts: beautiful and harsh, dry and lush, barren and plentiful.

Now on view: “Tracing Early Industry Through Pinhole and Tonal Memory” | Photographs by Darrell Roak

These beautiful Pizeography prints on cotton rag paper by Maine-based photographer Darrell Roak are made from photographs captured with pinhole lenses “as a deliberate act of restraint” in which time seems “to accumulate within the exposure.”

He writes: “Rather than reconstructing history, the photographs meet it quietly—through duration, inference, and absence. Edges soften, movement dissolves, and images gather less as description than as atmosphere.”
Roak’s images carry subtle tonal transitions, achieved through a meticulous hands-on approach: “Within a unified Piezography process, the work resolves into three visual registers—overall, middle-distance, and detail—each calibrated through platinum/palladium-like depth, Van Dyke–tonal presence, and salt-print delicacy to guide the viewer from place, to structure, to trace.”

🗓️ Join us for an online artist talk on June 17 and 18 from 6:30 to 8 PM.

Now on view: Benson Margulies, “There is Only One River”
Benson Margulies

For over 12,000 years, the vicinity of the Assabet River has been inhabited and cared for by Indigenous people, and been the homelands of the Nipmuc, Massachusett, and Pawtucket tribal nations.

In his Atelier 40 project, Benson Margulies photographs the Assabet River, creating striking black and white images that vary in location, season, time-of-day, and weather.

The artist shares: “As I slog through mud, ice, and sinewy brambles, I consider that nothing stands still: not text, not the river, and not me. Yet, here I am, freezing time on the freezing river, catching the plants at one instant in their journey from summer to winter, and myself in one spot in the mud.”

🗓️ Join us for an artist talk on June 17 and 18, from 6:30 to 8pm.

NEW EXHIBITION: 16th Annual Self-Published Photobook Exhibition

Every year, the Griffin Museum recognizes the importance of photobooks.

This summer we’re proud to celebrate this form of artistry featuring 52 self-published photo books in our Griffin Gallery.

Curated by Karen Davis and Crista Dix, the works selected for display were chosen for their unique narrative qualities, and of course, incredible images within their covers.

These are just some of the amazing photographs that caught our attention while going through at them.

🗓️ Join us for a Reception for the Artists on June 26 from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm.
