When golf and football meet, you get a pretty memorable Azalea Festival tradition. ⛳️🏈🌸

For three years, the Festival teamed up with Wilmington native Alex Highsmith, linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers , to host the Mini Golf Party at Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park These photos were taken at the party in 2025.

Fans had the chance to play a round of mini golf alongside Alex while supporting a cause close to home. Half of the event’s proceeds benefited the Alex Highsmith Family Foundation, which works to empower young people through fitness, education, and emotional support in Wilmington, Pittsburgh, and Charlotte.

It was a little golf, a little football, and a whole lot of community spirit. Exactly the kind of unexpected connection that makes Festival history so much fun to revisit. 🌸

In 1949, a Wilmington high school junior named Marguerite Todd stepped onto a stage and became the very first NC Azalea Festival Princess.

From that year forward, a young woman from our own community has carried the title, representing her hometown and the Festival.

The scholarship that has been presented to the Festival Princess since 2004, carries a legacy of its own. It honors Beverly Anne Jurgensen, who devoted 49 years of service to the NCAF. She served as Festival secretary for 25 years and became the Festival's first female President in 1992. Her leadership extended far beyond NCAF. She served numerous civic and community organizations while also building a successful professional career.

The Festival established the scholarship bearing her name with the hope that future participants would look to her life as an example of personal, professional, and community achievement.

Her story represents an idea at the heart of this program:
You can pursue personal success while helping your community bloom. 🌸

The photos here are of Marguerite Todd being crowned in 1949 and our reigning NCAF Princess, Emma Steele, crowned in 2026.
