The Deerfield Valley Players, a local community theater based in Memorial Hall in Wilmington, will be holding auditions for 1776, the 1969 Tony award-winning Broadway musical. The performances will be part of Wilmington's 250th celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The play is an imaginative recreation of those momentous days between May 1st and July 4th in Philadelphia when the Continental Congress argued about, voted on, and finally all signed it.
There are twentyfour men's roles and two women's roles. Seven of the men's roles are major singing roles, with four minor singing roles. All other male actors have speaking roles as members of the Continental Congress and are part of the chorus. Abigail Adams and Martha Jefferson are the two women's roles. And women are also encouraged to audition for men's roles.
The stage director for 1776 will be Diana Stugger. Barbara Lipstadt will be the musical director, and John Iverson the technical director.
