THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is a family-friendly musical that is charming and deeply human, shining a light on the inner lives of six adolescents vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. As they candidly share hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, these tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping to avoid the soul-crushing “ding” of the bell that signals a mistake.

Perfect for audiences of all ages, it is a joyful celebration of individuality, belonging, and the courage to be seen. Come see this New Light Theatre production, presented by DTC.

Dolly Parton’s legacy lives on at DTC… 💖

In 2022, Tricia Paoluccio brought Dolly and her music to life on our stage in the world premiere of HERE YOU COME AGAIN, a joyful celebration of one of the industry’s most beloved icons.

Now, Dolly’s legacy continues at DTC in a different way with STEEL MAGNOLIAS, Robert Harling’s beloved play that inspired the iconic film starring Dolly. This season, we’re proud to bring this enduring story of friendship, strength, and sisterhood to the Wilmington community.

Just like so many of you, we have been greatly inspired by Dolly, her timeless work, and her beautiful personality. We are honored to keep celebrating her extraordinary impact on music, theatre, and storytelling.

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, a New Light Theatre production, opens next month! 🐝

The original production was developed at Barrington Stage Company in 2004 and opened off-Broadway at Second Stage Theater in February 2005. It then transferred to Broadway's Circle in the Square Theatre that May, where it played 1,136 performances before closing in January 2008.

The show was a hit and was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning Best Book of a Musical and Best Featured Actor in a Musical. It has also won Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Book of a Musical and Outstanding Director of a Musical, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Musical Theater Album.

New Light Theatre is a professional theatre company based in Delaware, committed to creating theatre that raises awareness and support for causes. (SPELLING BEE supports Children & Families First Delaware, an organization providing support and services that children and their families in Delaware need to thrive.) New Light is also passionate about providing opportunities for emerging young theatre artists to work in a professional setting.

Lynn Nottage is a playwright, screenwriter, and installation artist. She is the first, and remains the only, woman to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice. Her plays have been produced widely in the United States and throughout the world. And next year, we bring her witty play CLYDE’s to our stage.

CLYDE’s is a sharp, soulful comedy about redemption and resilience. Set in a roadside sandwich shop staffed by formerly incarcerated workers, the play explores the healing power of food, the complexities of forgiveness, and the transformative strength of human connection.
