Here’s another great local landmark worthy of a summer day trip. It was , June 4, 1953, that Massachusetts acquired Castle Island from the U.S. Navy, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of Boston’s most historic waterfront landmarks. For centuries, Castle Island had served as a military stronghold guarding Boston Harbor, with Fort Independence standing watch through the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and beyond. Today, the site has transformed into one of the city’s favorite public spaces, where history, ocean views, and summer traditions come together. Visitors can walk the massive granite fort, watch planes descend toward Logan Airport, stroll the harbor paths, and enjoy one of the most recognizable seasonal food stands in Boston, Sullivan’s Castle Island.

📍 Address: Castle Island, 2010 William J Day Blvd, Boston, MA 02127
🕒 Hours: Grounds open daily year-round; Fort Independence tours typically operate seasonally
🗺️ Maps: https://maps.google.com/?q=Castle+Island+Boston
🍽️ Food recommendation: Sullivan’s at Castle Island for burgers, hot dogs, lobster rolls, and soft serve by the water
🌊 Travel tip: Walk the harbor loop around Fort Independence, watch ships enter Boston Harbor, and visit near sunset for some of the best waterfront views in the city

If you’re looking for something to do this summer, here’s another local landmark to visit. June 3, 1893, the Massachusetts legislature established the Metropolitan Park Commission, laying the groundwork for one of Greater Boston’s most beloved public spaces. The commission transformed the banks of the Charles River into the landscaped parkland now known as the Charles River Esplanade. Major support from Helen Osborne Storrow helped expand the park in memory of her husband, James, and decades later the Edward A. Hatch Memorial Shell rose along the river as a tribute funded by Maria Hatch in honor of her brother, Edward. Today, the Esplanade remains one of Boston’s great gathering places and is host to the Boston Pops during the annual July 4th celebrations. People come for the river views, sailboats, walking paths, concerts, and skyline sunsets that define summer in the city.

📍 Address: Edward A. Hatch Memorial Shell, 47 David G Mugar Way, Boston, MA 02108
🕒 Hours: Open daily as a public park; event hours vary throughout the year
🗺️ Maps: https://maps.google.com/?q=Hatch+Shell+Boston
🍽️ Food recommendation: Night Shift Brewing Esplanade, a seasonal beer garden and snack spot right along the river
🎶 Travel tip: The Hatch Shell hosts concerts, movie nights, and Boston’s famous Fourth of July celebration with the Boston Pops. Arrive early for major events and take time to walk the nearby footbridges and lagoon paths along the Esplanade
