Asgard Press - Vintage Stationery

Asgard Press - Vintage Stationery www.asgardpress.com -- Once upon a time, people bought millions of calendars a year, used them, and threw them away. This went on for a while.

www.asgardpress.com Eco-Publishers of vintage calendars featuring Golden Age Comics, Pulp Sci-Fi, Westerns, Maps, Baseball Cards, Botanicals, Space, Travel, Vintage America and more. Trees shed leaves of sorrow. One day, a small but determined publishing house began creating unique calendars using materials and production standards equal to the finest prints in all the land. They hoped that folks

would think twice before discarding them. Next, pages were designed with perforations, like giant postcards that detached easily, and would fit standard frames to suit any taste. Trees swayed with pride. But there was more work to do...

In 2007, that same intrepid publisher started producing its whole line of calendars using thick, FSC-certified paper and soy inks throughout. Trees shook with glee. But there was more work to do. Unsold calendars were still ending up in landfills year after year. So beginning in 2008, that ever-restless publisher started researching and contacting senior centers and nursing homes in select stores' neighborhoods, and together with those stores, starting making some donations and sharing some vintage love. At least once a year, a cool autumn breeze rustles through treetops across the country and announces that it's football season again. Some folks swear those rascally trees are doing 'the wave.'

There's still more work to do, but good changes are happening within a previously complacent and wasteful industry. Your comments and feedback have been and continue to be invaluable along this journey.

The name "Asgard" comes from Norse mythology, and was the realm of the gods, similar to Mount Olympus in Greek mythology. It is a nod to the Scandinavian settlers who first came to Delaware in the 1630s.

A quick note for our customers:
We’ve recently become aware that unauthorized imitation versions of some of our vintage-themed calendars are appearing on third-party marketplaces.

Some of these listings may use images that look identical to our official product photos online, but the physical product often does not match the quality, design, or content of an authentic Asgard Press calendar.

When purchasing an authentic Asgard Press calendar, look for:
✔ Original artwork and/or carefully restored vintage imagery
✔ Original commentary written by our regular contributors
✔ High-quality printing, paper, and binding
✔ Deluxe calendars with perforated images for easy removal
✔ Asgard Press branding on the back cover
✔ Purchase through Asgard Press or our official retail partners

If you’re ever unsure whether a listing is legitimate, we’re always happy to help.

Thank you for supporting original creative work and small publishing

Happy birthday, Betty Grable! Born on December 18, 1916, Grable was an actress, model, dancer, singer, pinup girl, and 20th Century-Fox’s biggest money-maker in the 1940s. Her enormously popular musicals films, in which she was paired with actors such as Victor Mature, Tyrone Powell, and Don Ameche, put her at the top of the box office. Her iconic swimsuit poster, shown here, made her the number one World War II pinup girl in the world and appeared in Life Magazine’s “100 Photos That Changed the World” project. Grable’s legs were famously insured for a million dollars by her studio as a publicity stunt, causing her to quip, “I became a star for two reasons, and I’m standing on them.” Contrary to rumors of the time, Grable was very friendly with fellow actress Marilyn Monroe, with whom she appeared in “How to Marry a Millionaire” in 1953. Unwillingly to engage in any sort of competition with Monroe, Grable told her, “Go and get yours, honey! I’ve got mine!” Grable passed away in 1973 at the age of only 56, leaving behind two daughters and several million broken-hearted fans.

“Planet Comics,” a sci-fi comic book published by Fiction House from 1940-1953, was a spin-off of the pulp science fiction magazine “Planet Stories” and was intended to broaden the publisher’s sci-fi audience to include younger readers. The comic followed the same “space opera” format as the pulp, featuring adventurous space heroes, alien warfare, and gorgeous women in very little clothing. The artwork featured on the covers of “Planet Comics” epitomized the “good girl art” of the era, with the word “good” referring not to morality but rather an idealism and hyperfeminization. Notable artists that contributed to “Planet Comics” include Will Eisner, Dan Zolne, Joe Doolin, Lily Renée, Matt Baker, and Fran Hopper. Though the comic series was clearly aimed at young men, “Planet Comics” had its fair share of female fans, often drawn to the issues featuring strong and capable heroines, a theme that also ran through sister pulp “Planet Stories” with tough women taking center stage on many covers by artist Allen Anderson. Of course, a heroine-heavy comic provided the opportunity to feature a seductive space girl on nearly every panel! Would you be interested in a calendar of Vintage Sci-Fi Comics?
