What your Blackjack dealer sees in the mirror
The “dealer peek mirror” is an integral part of your local casino’s blackjack table. It’s actually a device with a pair of angled mirrors that allows the dealer to see the pip displayed on the hole card without turning the cards over. The reflected hole card can only be seen from directly above the mirror, where the dealer is standing.
Invented by a retired dealer in the 1960s, the dealer peek mirror speeds up play and makes the game more secure, preventing the hole card from being exposed to players or spotters trying to cheat.
For the dealer, it can be both a blessing and a curse. Mirrors on older tables can be scratched up, dirty, foggy, or hard to read under intense casino lighting. Often, the dealer is checking the mirror and making a “best guess” before flipping the hole card to end the game.
The image (clearly) shows an Ace up card and a 10 under it -- not good news for the players.
