CAM is home to the Minnie Evans Study Center and is committed to preserving and researching her life and work. Recently we were joined in the Study Center by Yale University PHD Candidate Colton Klein.

His article "The Turpentine State: Minnie Evans and North Carolina Ecologies" has now been published in the spring issue of Smithsonian's American Art Journal published by University of Chicago Press Journals It is a fascinating article that deeply connects Minnie Evans and her art to our region.

The Spring issue of American Art Journal is available now. Click here to read the article's Abstract: https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/729354

The Study Center, which was funded by the North Carolina Arts Council, preserves the papers of Minnie Evans, research, and ephemera associated with the artist. CAM owns more art works by Minnie Evans than any other institution.

For more information on Minnie Evans and the Minnie Evans Study Center, please contact Susan Whisnant, Registrar of Collections and Exhibitions [email protected]

Abstract North Carolina artist Minnie Evans is well-known for the symmetrical, abstracted floral drawings that she produced from 1930 until her death in 1987. Less well known are her naturalistic compositions of identifiable locations around Wilmington, North Carolina, where she lived. Evans’s cho...

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of American artist Faith Ringgold at the age of 93.

Margalit Fox, of The New York Times, writes, "For more than a half-century, Ms. Ringgold explored themes of race, gender, class, family and community through a vast array of media, among them painting, sculpture, mask- and dollmaking, textiles and performance art. She was also a longtime advocate of bringing the work of Black people and women into the collections of major American museums."

We are very proud to have Ringgold's Coming to Jones Road Print #1: Under a Blood Red Sky as part of our permanent collection.

In Stay in the Light, South Carolina artist Charles Edward Williams draws inspiration from historical photography of the Civil Rights movement, offering a contemporary response to social and political issues of the past and present.

The radio included in the exhibition belonged to the artists's grandmother. He writes, "It brings back a peaceful nostalgia for me. My grandmother would play gospel music on it. There would be clean sheets on the line drying and she'd be singing along..."

His paintings and installation works incorporate a strong use of color and gesture, inviting a focus on human emotion and our connectedness and commonality.

A Cultural Gathering Place

Cameron Art Museum, eastern NC’s art museum, was established in 1962. CAM provides a cultural gathering place that enriches the lives of museum visitors and our community through high quality exhibitions, lifelong learning in the arts, dynamic public programs, and stewardship and interpretation of the permanent collection. CAM has been a collecting institution since its inception, with approximately 3000 objects in the permanent collection, including work by Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Mary Cassatt, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Rauschenberg, and Wayne Thiebaud. The collection includes work by artists of national and international significance, used in changing thematic exhibitions and for educational purposes.

Your support of Cameron Art Museum allows us to continue to serve southeastern North Carolina through exhibitions, programs, and educational outreach to our community and local schools, including free field trips for all New Hanover County fifth graders, outreach to underserved populations, and our Connections program, which serves those living with Alzheimer’s or disability.

The work featured here is one of our favorites: Claude Howell, Back Porch (detail), oil on canvas, 1950. Gift of Richard E. Tomes in memory of John G. Croley.
