If you're looking for the perfect overture to get you into the Halloween spirit this October: OperaDelaware has you covered.

DON GIOVANNI opens with a masked intruder and a m*rder, sends its characters to a ball in disguise, stages a conversation with a talking statue in a graveyard in the middle of the night, and ends with a dinner guest made of stone arriving to drag the title character into the flames. Not to mention, Don Giovanni and his servant Leporello swap costumes to trick a woman who still loves him, which may be the most Halloween thing anyone has done in the 239 years since the opera premiered. It is also, exactly as Mozart and Da Ponte intended, very funny, right up until the moment it isn't.

Spooky season starts early at The Grand Opera House, Wilmington DE:

Two ways to enjoy Mozart’s masterpiece this October!

DON GIOVANNI PORTRAITS: October 8 at 7:30 PM · October 10 at 2:00 PM — OperaDelaware Studios

DON GIOVANNI: October 16 at 7:30 PM · October 18 at 7:30 PM — The Grand Opera House

Produced in collaboration with Opera Baltimore

Tickets for both at operade.org

The first is DON GIOVANNI PORTRAITS, October 8 + 10 at the OperaDelaware Studios. A brilliant group of soloists perform excerpts from Mozart’s opera with narration, accompanied by a new chamber arrangement by Husan Chun-Novak for piano quintet, clarinet, and bassoon. In this iteration, there is no set and there is very little distance between the singers and the audience.

The second is DON GIOVANNI itself, October 16 + 18 at The Grand Opera House. This is the full opera with an extraordinary cast, directed by Haley Stamats and conducted by Joshua Horsch. All of this in a 1,200 seat opera house and still makes Mozart feel like he is singing directly to you.

These are not the same ticket, nor are they are not competing experiences. They are the same story, but seen from different distances, and both distances reveal something the other cannot. You can certainly choose one, but with two stellar casts of soloists... you won’t want to miss either!
