Today is #InternationalWomensDay! The Tutu School franchise began in 2008 with founder and CEO Genevieve Custer Weeks. Since then, Tutu School has grown to include just under 30 “franchiserinas!” We’re so proud to have created such a strong team of women.💖
Today is #NationalReadAcrossAmericaDay! Our Tutu School storybook adventures are inspired by the classic ballet stories that we include in our curriculum. One of our very favorites is Sleeping Beauty, a tale showing that courage and love can always make things better💗💫👑📚
We couldn’t do our #blackhistorymonth hightlights without the incredible Misty Copeland!
Misty Copeland made history as the first African American ballerina to be promoted to the rank of Principal Dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theater in their 75 year history. In addition to her dance career, she was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine and is a spokesperson, public speaker, author, and role model for thousands of young dancers. (Fun Fact: Tutu School recently sold signed copies of her most recent children's book Bunheads. The proceeds went to support @browngirlsdoballet ) Learn more about Misty Copeland here: @mistyonpointe 💗
We’re continuing to highlight some amazing black dancers! Next up: Aesha Ash!
In 1996 at 18, Aesha Ash joined the New York City Ballet and was the only African American woman in the company at the time. She then went on to dance with Béjart Ballet, Alonso King LINES Ballet, and Morphoses. In 2011 she founded @theswandreamsproject to encourage African American children to start ballet. In 2020, she became the first Black female member of the School of American Ballet's permanent faculty. (Fun Fact: Aesha Ash also briefly taught classes at Tutu School in California!)🩰💓✨

Today is #NationalMakeAFriendDay! We can’t wait for your little ones to make some of their forever friends with us!💕
February is #blackhistorymonth! All month long we will be showcasing artists that celebrate Black achievements in the dance world! Our first highlight, Debra Austin, has a connection to NC!
Debra Austin was the first African American female dancer at the New York City Ballet at age 16, and is credited as the first African American Principal dancer of a major American Ballet company when she was invited to join Pennsylvania Ballet as a Principal in 1982. She also danced with Zurich Ballet in Switzerland. She has taught all over the country since retiring in 1990, and currently serves as a Ballet Mistress for Carolina Ballet right here in Raleigh, NC.

We’re welcoming February with love and kindness in our hearts💘
January is #InternationalCreativityMonth! At Tutu School, we’ve worked to build a creative dance education experience for children and a place where students are urged to fully exercise their imaginations as well as their bodies. We wouldn’t have it any other way!
Each and every class at Tutu School finishes with Ballet Storytime where we read and perform different sections from a famous ballet story each week. We also dance to music from the ballet itself, exposing little ones to Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky while they learn how to tell a story through their own movements. Each Ballet Storytime performance helps us close out every class with an extra dash of magic.✨

Today is Korean American Day! There are a number of ways to celebrate. We encourage you to research Korean dances, order local Korean food, read up on Korean American history or watch a Korean movie!💜
Every month, students in our most advanced division, Primary Ballet Prep, learn a new Step of the Month. One of our very favorites is arabesque. In arabesque, we hold onto the ballet barre and stand on one strong leg with the other leg reaching behind us, making a long line from our nose to our toes. When we feel ready to balance without holding onto the barre, we stretch our arms out like points of a shiny star.🌟
Today is #InternationalChoreographersDay! Thank you to all of the wonderful choreographers who inspire us to dance! “You dance because you have to. Dance is an essential part of life that has always been with me.” – Katherine Dunham
In Primary Ballet Prep, we develop pure, fundamental ballet techniques that will eventually allow our students to graduate to a more disciplined study of the craft – when their little bodies are ready. Make sure you stay tuned for more information about our new location and how to get your dancer signed up!✨🩰💗
Happy #SmallBusinessSaturday! We can’t wait to start sharing our big dreams with you! When you enroll at Tutu School, not only are you supporting our dreams of being business owners, but you’re also supporting the dreams of every little one who wants to dance. Stay tuned for more information about our new location, and how you can start experiencing the Tutu School magic soon!✨🩰💞

Every child should know what it feels like to dance.
This is the founding principle of Tutu School. We believe that motor skill development is infinitely enhanced by Tchaikovsky and Bach, that young imaginations benefit immensely from exploring the enchanted worlds of swans and sugar plums, and that twirling should be a fundamental part of any childhood. Every aspect of our curriculum is carefully crafted for each division of dancer, and our faculty is unparalleled in its quality and devotion to what we do. Schedule a free trial class by registering online at https://www.tutuschool.com/wilmington.
In addition to our ballet classes for children and toddlers we offer camp and parties to create lifelong unforgettable memories!
South Carolina native, Madeline, began dancing at the age of two, and ballet quickly became her first true passion. She performed as a young dancer in productions of The Nutcracker, Dracula, and Cinderella, then extensively trained under the former National President of the Cecchetti Council of America - an organization dedicated to maintaining the standards and method of ballet training.
Madeline attended college at Coastal Carolina University, where she graduated with a BS in Business Management. She further pursued her education and obtained both her Law Degree and Masters of Business Administration from Campbell University. During the three years she was in Law School, which was located in Downtown Raleigh, North Carolina, Madeline watched the downtown area there grow and change as improvements were made and new businesses came in. She fell in love with the revitalization of downtown areas and coming from a family of entrepreneurs and business owners, her ideas started flowing.
Madeline and her daughter Eloise moved to Wilmington in September 2017. She ultimately chose Wilmington as it is close to her family in South Carolina and has a thriving arts community. Madeline was also drawn to the downtown business community in Wilmington with its historic charm and continued opportunities for growth. An additional bonus: her being able to practice law alongside running the school!
When Madeline was deciding on a business idea, Tutu School was a no-brainer for her. While she has had many passions that have come and gone throughout the years, ballet is one that never waivered. She strongly believes that the magic of ballet shaped who she is and taught her to always pursue her dreams, no matter how big, because anything is possible. She is thrilled to share this magic with young children in Wilmington!
