We wanted to take the time to thank , , and everyone involved with picking as the charity of choice to donate to in KD’s name.
Short back story… a little over a month ago, many were hit with the sad news of the sudden loss of a dear friend and loved one, Kevin Durant. KD was a wonderful and positive individual. and my personal experiences go back to about 15-20 years in multiple circles. We crossed paths so much between mutual friends, music, sports, and just enjoying life.
His love for music goes so far back, and he was a perfect example of just enjoying the music, as a performer or spectator. Nothing would take that enjoyment away.
Him and I had talked about PIFW, and he loved the concept and knew the importance of music as an art form to be good for the soul, both physically and mentally, for people of all ages.
After his celebration of life, Moe’s hosted a gathering of friends, family, and loved ones, and in his name, raised funds to donate to a local charity. Many had gotten together, and because of KD’s love for music and wanting everyone to experience it, they chose Play It Forward Wilmington as the charity to donate to in his name.
KD, we love you and we promise to do everything we can to get so many involved with playing. Our main focus is the youth, but we strive to get anyone playing, as long as it’s bringing joy and excitement to their life, just like it did for you.

“Play It Forward Wilmington” is asking for the community to help spread Christmas Cheer by donating instruments

The nonprofit, “Play It Forward” is paying it forward by giving away instruments to children of families in need ahead of Christmas. Last year, the organization donated over 60 instruments and this year they are hoping to beat that number.

Happy Giving Tuesday!!!!
What a perfect day to announce that Play it forward Wilmington has officially been approved as a tax- exempt charity under section 501(c)3 of the US Tax code. 

This means that moving forward, each and every cash or instrument donation is now tax- deductible! We could have never done this without the support of so many through this growing process. We thank you all so much!!

In addition, we are happy to announce the addition of Eric Silman to our team. Eric handled the nonprofit application and will be helping with bookkeeping and donations going forward.

We are very grateful to our community for your ongoing support of play it forward Wilmington, and our mission of bringing the gift of music to our local community.

Please know that we are a donation based organization and can only provide to so many.

We are also accepting instrument donations and funding. If you have an instrument donation, please reach out to us through Facebook or Instagram.
Most of the instruments we provide are guitars, bass guitars, drums/percussion, horn instruments, and keyboards.

What started as a idea in 2015 where I was gifting kids my old drum sets, turned into a bigger thing than I expected as friends and were reaching out to donate their unused instruments and I would clean them up and donate them to kids, or really anyone that wanted to play. This idea really showed its potential during the pandemic.
In 2020, with some help from others, we started promoting this idea and raising funds as well. All money raised was used for purchasing new and used instruments, repairs and hardware for cleaning up the used instruments, and storage for everything.
Later in 2020, we hosted a holiday instrument drive where we worked with 5 families providing brand new instruments for their kids. We helped out about 15-20 individuals/families with new and used instruments over the whole year.
Then going into 2021, we went back to work and kept the focus more on used instruments. Throughout 2021, we helped out over 60 families/individuals, and 46 of that was kids during our holiday instrument drive.
As we’re still in the learning curve with the growth of Play It Forward Wilmington, we’re so happy to be able to provide something for the community out of something we’ve been blessed with our whole lives. For myself personally, I owe most of my friendships, relationships, and life experiences, to playing music.

Below is the backstory from John W. Golden on the guitar….

The guitar belonged to my dad (John C. Golden). I heard he bought it from a friend's son who had gone off to college and my dad used the guitar on a recording and liked it. Knowing the kid was preferential to other guitars he had with him at school, my dad made him an offer on the guitar and the rest is history.
I was unaware that he had it until after my dad passed away. Following his death, my son and I were going through Dad's instruments and gear, with the mindset that they should be somewhere they would be loved and played, not sitting in a case or gathering dust.
My son and I are both many years into our own musical journeys, and I felt that the Les Paul and a handful of smaller amps my dad had were unlikely to see much playing time with either of us. I came across Play It Forward Wilmington as you were gearing up for Christmas 2021, and we thought it would be a perfect way to get these items into the hands of people who would use them.
You and I agreed that the Les Paul would be more useful as a way to fund multiple instruments, instrument rehabs, etc. and that the way it would help PIFW would present itself.
So happy you settled on the raffle idea and that it has been such a success. This is exactly the type of impact my dad would want his love of music to have.

And welcome to our third year of hosting Play It Forward Wilmington’s holiday instrument drive.

First off, we’d like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years
with instrument donations or funding to help us clean up the instruments and find new homes for them. We could’ve never done this without your support.

The 2022 year has brought on new growth and changes to our organization. This year, we’ve moved into a physical location to allow for more storage space, a workshop, and to have a place for receiving donations and for picking up. This has been a big move for us that needed to happen.

For this years holiday drive, it will be a lot like the past years where We’ll be accepting most instrument donations, and taking in funding for purchasing instruments, purchasing replacement parts, accessories, and any other spending that’s needed.

Our main focus for the holiday drive is for kids to receive these instruments, but we are a year round organization, and we want to get instruments into the hands of anyone wanting to learn to play.
