"Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, or the "darker half" of the year. Celebrated on the night of October 31st, the Celts believed that during Samhain, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred, and spirits could return to Earth.
As Christianity spread, the holiday became merged with the Christian observance of All Saints' Day, also known as All Hallows, on November 1st. The evening before All Hallows came to be known as All Hallows' Eve, and eventually, Halloween.
Many of the traditions associated with Halloween, such as costumes and lighting bonfires, have roots in the ancient Samhain festival. Over time, Halloween has evolved into the more commercial, community-focused event we know today, with activities like trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, and dressing up in costumes."
