Had some friends over for "play days" over the weekend and on one of the days we tested the indoor indigo vat. First photo below shows strips of color after 1, 2 ,3 or 4, three minute dips. Nice blues, but not as deep as I'd like, so tomorrow I'll do some longer dips.
In japan, when we were using natural indigo like this vat is nade with (vs. Synthetic indigo), we did 10 dips ( and some of the masters i met talked of doing 40 to achieve an almost black!).
Once I see how this vat settles out, I'll make up the outdoor vat ( also 30 gallons!) and maybe I'll make that vat stronger so for class in August we'll have a couple blues to work with. Check out the class details on the website. Its the first Sat and Sun in August. I used a couple patterns i was introduced to by Takayuki for the test swatches.

Not another rainy weekend!? Come to the shop for a color fix that will brighten your day and pick up a new project. A lot of Rios, Rasta , and Mecha arrived earlier this week. And this morning a fiery new red in the popular Roam Highland Wool by Plymouth arrived.

Washing another fleece today. Having washed a white one last week to replenish our white "locks" supply, I decided to wash a natural colored longwool today. Its beautiful if you're looking for locks that are brownish-Grey with caramel and cocoa highlights! And what a lovely crimp on this one!
Between washes, I'll be recharging the two 30 gallon indigo vats- friends are coming this sunday for a "play day" and we'll make sure they are primed for the natural dye class in July!
Lastly, Chris unpacked a restock of Malabrigo's Mecha, Rasta, and Rios yesterday! So we've got lots of fun colors for you to play with if you stop by today!

Just a reminder - we open at 11:30 tomorrow morning. Its the last Saturday with a delayed opening! Thanks for your understanding. Im busy watching potential new yarns for the fall between customers today. This gives me a chance to try a few needle sizes to evaluate gauge and fabric. And, critically, allows me to do the "60 seconds of vigorous rubbing test" to see how a yarn holds up in high risk pilling situation! This yarn did well-after a minute of abrasive rubbing, the swatch didnt really pill -rather it loosed a few hairs as seen gathered in the middle of the white needle sizer.

Yeah! Natural white locks are back in stock- I washed one of the fleeces up on Wednesday and it was dry this am so I bagged up 41 units. Hopefully I can get more fleeces washed and dried next week. And....new sashiko stencils arrived this morning as well as another NEW book on sashiko stitching which arrived along with a reorder of some existing popular books on the topic.

For the expected ( mending jeans and shirts) as well as less expected ( socks, blankets, kerchiefs, etc). Stop by today and pick up one of these books al9ng with the special sashiko cotton thread ( it truly is different and better than embroidery thread for mending!) and needles and get yourself ( or someone else) addicted to decoratove stitching repair!!

Between washing fleeces and meeting with yarn reps today, I had a chance to hang up some of the 100% naturally dyed applique squares I've been working on. They show the amazing colors you can achieve dyeing yarn (in this case silk threads to stitch with) and fabric ( in this case 100% wool fabric) using leaves, stems and roots from the garden out back ( weeds too!). There are a few kitchen scraps ( like onion skins, carrot tops etc) and wood shavings from my brothers word working shop included with the plants from the garden! I did purchase indigo elsewhere to get the blues and I brought cochenile and purple corn back from peru as well as a natural dye I collected on a trip to Morocco (from a sea snail). I hope some of you can join us for the natural dye and Botanical print class here July 18th and 19th so you can experience the colors from nature yourself! You'll learn many techniques for extracting color from nature, modifying it with pH changes and mordant choice. And you'll have some fun new colors to play with this fall in a special project!
