In February, Nick Pope shared that he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Sadly, today his family shared that he has passed away. For decades, Nick had shared his eloquent and thoughtful insights not only on Ancient Aliens, but also through his books and interviews. Last year, Ladi and I spent time with Nick when he was in town and talked with him for a couple hours, interviewing him for the Sauniere Society Journal (link in profile). Whether or not you agree with everything Nick believed, he was charming, kind, funny, and generous with his time and insights. Thank you Nick—we are very sad to see you go. My thoughts are with your wife, your family, and all your loved ones. 👽 🛸

Today is the Feast of the Annunciation—aka Lady Day—which celebrates the moment Gabriel appeared to Mary and Jesus was conceived, per some medieval painting, through her ear. Traditionally, this feast day has also celebrated taxes (not my fave) and… waffles (my fave!). But how do taxes, waffles, and divinely wrought motherhood relate to each other???

Well, in Sweden, Lady Day was called Vårfrudagen. Over time, because of similar pronunciations, that word slipped into the vernacular as Våffeldagen, which literally means Waffle Day. And this change stuck. Today, folks in Sweden still celebrate Waffle Day on March 25 and serve waffles to mark Lady Day, all thanks to a linguistic mix-up.

In medieval Europe, Lady Day also kicked off the legal, financial, and agricultural New Year (until 1752), and aligned with the vernal equinox in the Roman calendar. The UK tax year—starting April 6—is a lingering echo of the old March 25 date, shifted by the Gregorian calendar.

So enjoy some waffles today, or do your taxes—but either way, guard your ears!
