SPENCER SPEEDWAY REMEMBERS GORDON JOHNCOCK

During the early era of Spencer Speedway, the track hosted weekly Supermodified racing in 1962 and 1963. Among the notable drivers to visit Victory Lane during that period was Gordon Johncock.

Johncock, from Hastings, Michigan, became an American motorsports icon, ultimately winning the Indianapolis 500 twice, first in 1973 and again in 1982. His memorable 1982 victory came by just 0.16 seconds, one of the closest finishes in Indianapolis 500 history.

Johncock passed away yesterday, and Spencer Speedway management and staff extend our thoughts, prayers and sincerest condolences to the Johncock family, his friends and his many fans throughout the racing world.

From the Supermodifieds at Spencer Speedway to Victory Lane at Indianapolis, Gordon Johncock built an incredible career in American motorsports.

We are proud to say that Gordon Johncock and his accomplishments are part of the rich history of Spencer Speedway.

SPENCER SPEEDWAY REMEMBERS DICK KLUTH

The Spencer Speedway family joins the Western New York and Modified racing community in mourning the loss of one of the sport's longtime pioneers, Dick Kluth of Hilton, N.Y.

For many years, Dick and his familiar Long Pond Auto Parts No. 27 machines were part of the racing landscape throughout Western New York, including right here at Spencer Speedway.

Dick raced during an era when families loaded up the race car, worked with what they had and headed to the speedway together. He competed on a budget, with his family alongside him, and helped represent what grassroots Modified racing was—and continues to be—all about.

His family's continued involvement in the sport makes his legacy even more meaningful.

Spencer Speedway management and staff extend our deepest and most sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers to Dick's family, friends and everyone whose life he touched throughout his many years in racing.

Our history is made up of people like Dick Kluth. We are grateful that the No. 27 was part of the history and tradition of Spencer Speedway.

He will certainly be missed.

🏁 REMEMBERING DON WHALEN 🏁

The Western New York racing community and Spencer Speedway have lost another of the drivers who helped create the history and tradition of the sport in our region with the passing of Don Whalen.

Don was a constant presence at Spencer Speedway and race tracks throughout Western New York, competing for many years in his familiar and recognizable No. 05 machines.

Drivers like Don are an important part of the foundation upon which the history of places like Spencer Speedway was built. They showed up, competed, created memories and became familiar faces to generations of racers and race fans.

As we continue to celebrate and preserve the history of Spencer Speedway, it is important that we remember the people who helped create that history.

The Race of Champions and Spencer Speedway extend our sincerest thoughts, prayers and condolences to Don's family, friends and everyone whose life he touched throughout the years.

Don Whalen will be missed, but his place in the history of Western New York racing and Spencer Speedway will not be forgotten. 🏁

🏁 A SPECIAL NIGHT AT SPENCER SPEEDWAY — AND A THANK YOU 🏁

Race of Champions management and the staff of the Race of Champions would like to take a moment to simply say THANK YOU to everyone who continues to help keep Spencer Speedway open and oval-track racing alive in Williamson.

It takes a tremendous number of people working both in front of and behind the scenes to make a race night happen.

Our volunteers, employees, officials, sponsors, marketing partners, competitors and fans all play a role. Without their time, effort, dedication and support, none of this would be possible. We appreciate every person who continues to contribute to keeping the tradition of Spencer Speedway alive.

Friday night provided a perfect reminder of why those efforts matter.

For the first time, we held the Spencer Speedway “Oval of Fame” induction ceremony, bringing together people and families who represent generations of the Speedway's history.

Representing the inaugural class were members of the Spencer family; Alyssa Troyer, representing her father Kenny and grandfather Maynard Troyer; and Colleen Toal and her daughter Meghan D'Hondt, representing Don and Marilyn Toal.

They were joined by legendary Spencer Speedway drivers Wilbur Hebing, Jan Leaty and Tony Hirschman, along with many others who have been part of the Speedway's remarkable history.

For a few minutes, generations of Spencer Speedway history were standing together in one place.

Those are the moments that make this sport special.

Racing is about competition, but it is also about people, families, friendships, memories and traditions that stretch from one generation to the next.

We sincerely hope Friday night was only the first of many Spencer Speedway “Oval of Fame” ceremonies.

To everyone who helped make Friday night possible—and everyone who has helped keep the gates opening and the lights coming on at Spencer Speedway—
