IMEC CONFERENCE PRESENTATION

Here at Williamsfield Schools we pride ourselves in our ability to create innovative, educational opportunities for our students. A big shout out to Ms. McKenna and the rock band and choir students (collectively, playfully referred to as The Island of Misfit Toys) as they presented Friday, January 31 at the Illinois Music Educators Conference at the Peoria Civic Center.

Not every school has a rock band class, and the uniqueness of this opportunity was emphasized by the number of music educators and students from across the state of Illinois who came to watch Ms. McKenna present and offer an explanation of how a rock band class comes to be, the inner workings, and learning opportunities it creates. Throughout her presentation, the students offered examples by way of performances and explanations.

Madeline Wood from ILMEA (Illinois Music Educators Association) said, “I was so impressed by Jennifer McKenna's presentation and the performance by Island of Misfit Toys. There were many educators from across Illinois in attendance who, as a result of the session, now feel empowered, equipped, and excited to start a rock band class at their school. It was evident the student musicians enjoyed what they were doing and took pride in their performance. I will definitely attend a rock show at Williamsfield in the future!”

A fun and energetic glimpse into the idea that everybody who wants to access music, can.
