The Linda Matney Gallery is a Curator-driven art space in Williamsburg, Virginia. The gallery was founded by John Lee Matney to exhibit innovative and emerging artwork from both national and international artists and works by students and professors associated with top universities. With a focus on painting, photography, installation, video, sculpture, and performance art, the Linda Matney Gallery provides a unique opportunity for patrons to view some of the most significant pieces being created today. The Linda Matney Gallery is a contemporary art gallery founded in honor of Linda Matney, who lost her battle with cancer in 2001. The gallery specializes in curating services for museum exhibitions and art collections, notably Southern figurative art and photography. We are exclusive agents in Virginia of the deeper catalogs of select contemporary artists, which we showcase in special previews of new and newly available work at our exhibitions. Wagner’s sculpture begins with wood as both material and subject. Carving, assembling, and preserving the evidence of the hand, he allows the natural history of the material to remain visible rather than disguising it.

The resulting figures occupy an unusual space between observation and invention. Familiar forms emerge, but they retain the irregularities, surfaces, and physical character of the wood from which they were made.

Work by Christopher B. Wagner is part of the continuing presentation at Matney Gallery and will be included in the Salon Annex this fall.

In Tell Me a Story, a domestic interior becomes a study of observation, memory, and the imaginative life of childhood.

Kreydatus depicts his son James seated on a rocking horse, surrounded by an old mannequin and objects drawn from family life. The specificity of the scene matters, but the painting does not settle into anecdote. Instead, familiar objects begin to carry a psychological presence of their own, opening the image to memory, uncertainty, and invention.

Our new article places Tell Me a Story within Kreydatus’s larger practice as a painter, printmaker, and teacher, tracing his commitment to working from observation and the artists who have shaped his thinking, including Max Beckmann, Lucian Freud, Käthe Kollwitz, Goya, and Rembrandt.

It also follows the connections between studio practice, teaching, and the museum, from his work at William & Mary and printmaking projects with Steve Prince to works exhibited at the Chrysler Museum of Art and the 2026 Taiwan International Print Biennial.

Sometimes the most interesting relationships in an exhibition happen quietly.

In the Fall Salon, photographs from Elizabeth Mead’s Small Hall are presented alongside poems from Emily W. Pease’s Wild Unexpected.

Mead’s photographs consider space, structure, memory, and the act of looking. Pease approaches experience through language, compression, and observation. Neither explains the other. Instead, image and poem occupy the gallery together, creating a space between seeing and reading.

Steve A. Prince unveiled a newly completed large scale woodcut at Matney Gallery’s September reception.

Dense carved line moves through figures, symbols, pattern, and architectural forms, allowing multiple histories and experiences to occupy the same field. The work continues Prince’s sustained engagement with memory, community, faith, and collective experience.

Prince’s work is currently featured at Matney Gallery and at Privé at Saté, where The Block is presented alongside additional works.

Drawing from the visual language of classical antiquity, Olga Tobreluts places historical imagery within a distinctly contemporary framework. In Diana, the circular format gives the figure the presence of both portrait and emblem, connecting painting to a much longer history of representing mythology, beauty, and power.

Tobreluts will be in Williamsburg later this month in connection with Awakening II: Olga Tobreluts, Ivan Plusch, and Oleg Dou at Matney Gallery.

Nicole Santiago
A group of small interior paintings by Nicole Santiago creates one of the most intimate encounters in the exhibition.

Their miniature scale asks the viewer to move closer. Rooms, furniture, plants, objects, and areas of color are compressed into remarkably concentrated spaces.

Santiago has long moved between the figure, still life, and the domestic interior. In these smaller works, human presence can be felt even when the figure itself is absent. Ordinary surroundings become psychologically charged through composition, color, and close observation.

Elizabeth Mead and Emily W. Pease
Elizabeth Mead’s Small Hall consists of five photographs, presented in the Fall Salon in conversation with five poems from Emily W. Pease’s Wild Unexpected.

The photographs and poems remain distinct works. Their pairing creates a sequence in which image and language can be encountered side by side without one functioning as an explanation of the other.

Mead’s photographs consider space through framing, light, interval, and the experience of looking. Pease’s poems introduce another way of attending to place, memory, and perception. Moving between the five pairings, the viewer shifts repeatedly between seeing and reading.

Pease is also the winner of the 2025 New Women’s Voices Chapbook Competition for Long For This World.

John Lee reimagines the flower painting through an unlikely construction of everyday objects. Yellow forms become the petals of a sunflower; a roll of black tape becomes its center.

Beneath it, a crouching Vegas-era Elvis appears on a coffee mug, supporting the “planetary” form above—Elvis as Atlas.

Still life becomes stage, and the familiar shifts into abstraction, architecture, and myth.
