Title: Behind the Scenes Tour and Lunch at the Amerind Museum
January 15, 8:30-12:30
Fee: $95
Amerind Museum is a private museum located in scenic Texas Canyon, a short 25-minute drive from Willcox in the town of Dragoon. Founded in 1937, Amerind houses extraordinary Native American arts and crafts from throughout the western hemisphere, including a stunning 10,000 piece collection of Zuni and Navajo jewelry. Join the museum’s Chief Curator Dr. Eric J. Kaldahl for an exclusive behind the scenes look at Amerind’s collections, enjoy a tour through their art gallery and museum, and shop Native-made art in the Museum Store. The group will be sub-divided into smaller groups for space considerations during the behind the scenes portion. After the tour, participants will dine in the historic home of Amerind’s founding family which is not open to the public. This is self-drive field trip and participants will depart the Willcox Community Center by 7:55 am, and should plan to arrive at the Amerind Museum no later than 8:30 am.

The Wings Over Willcox Birding and Nature Festival features field trips, seminars, and a Nature Expo with hands on activities, vendors, and displays.

MEET OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER:

George Archibald

Co-Founder of the International Crane Foundation

Dr. George Archibald co-founded the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin, in the spring of 1973, along with Dr. Ronald Sauey, a colleague and friend from Cornell University, as a global center to study and conserve cranes and protect the habitats and flyways they need to survive. For 27 years, Dr. Archibald served as the President of the Foundation. In 2000, he passed on this leadership, and ever since, he has continued his full-time work to help raise the funds needed to fulfill the Foundation’s mission, while also supporting the many global programs he started. His current focus involves work in Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Cuba, China, Pakistan, South Korea, and Russia. Dr. Archibald has always used the charisma of cranes to help unite people from diverse cultures and countries to work together to preserve habitats necessary for the survival of both cranes and people.

Banquet Talk: Cranes of the World

Cranes, with their natural beauty and entrancing dances, are the ambassadors of wetlands, grasslands, and flyways worldwide (except in South America, where for unknown reasons cranes have never been present). The Sandhill Cranes that visit Sulphur Springs Valley are just one of the world’s 15 species of these remarkable birds! North America is host to two species, along with seven species endemic in Asia, four in Africa, and one in Australia. George Archibald, co-founder of the International Crane Foundation (ICF) and now its Senior Conservationist, will share the story of cranes and what ICF does to help all species of cranes as well as the humans who share their landscapes.

Many of these migrating waterfowl that start out in New Mexico end up veering off and coming over to Willcox and the Sulphur Springs Valley. We look forward to welcoming the new arrivals!

A few early birds this year, as our Sandhill Cranes usually don't start arriving until October. We're hoping that the recent rainfall in Cochise County will continue bringing needed water to the Whitewater Draw area.
