Four frames. A few seconds. A body in motion. 📸

Stephan Koplowitz transforms the familiar photobooth into a space for choreography. Within its fixed frame and timed sequence, each photograph captures a single gesture—but together, the images reveal movement, rhythm, and change.

What would you do with four frames? Strike a pose, tell a story, make a dance?

Come see how Koplowitz plays with the possibilities of the photobooth in Of Place and Passage: Actions and Images, on view at the Sordoni Art Gallery.

An Intro Into The Art of Georgia O'Keeffe:

Born on November 15, 1887, the second of seven children, Georgia O'Keeffe came into our world. She grew up on a small farm in Wisconsin and by the time she graduated from high school, she was motivated to make her mark in the art world. O’Keeffe studied at the Art Institute of Chicago as well as the Art Students League in New York, where she learned the techniques of painting. Years later, she began experimenting with abstraction while she taught art in West Texas. Through this source of meditation for her, she found a language in art to express her feelings.

Her art was shown to Alfred Stieglitz, an art dealer, who eventually became the husband of O’Keeffe. He became the first person to exhibit her art in 1916. By the 1920s, she became one of America’s most successful female artists.

O’Keeffe’s art is significantly inspired by landscapes such as those in northern New Mexico. She made many international trips throughout her life and she often painted works that evoke the places she visited, including Japan’s Mount Fuji. Late in her life, around 1977, partially blind, she got the help of many assistants to enable her to continue art creation. In these later works she drew on her favorite motifs of memory and her wild imagination. O’Keeffe died in Santa Fe on March 6, 1986, at the age of 98.

Yes, a Xerox can be art.

In The Silence Between Borders: Caught in the Frame, Stephan Koplowitz uses xerography to transform photographic imagery through fragmentation, repetition, and scale. The familiar act of making a copy becomes a tool for making something new.

Check out his latest xerographic mural in our Karambelas hallway. And see it in Of Place and Passage: Actions and Images, on view through October 18.
