Over the years, orchestra concerts have multiplied. Orchestra teacher Joe Gutowski said Lafayette used to have only have one concert in the spring but it became too long with the volume of music they played. “The spring concert would then get to be two and a half hours which is too long in the middle of the week,” Gutowski said. Because of this, he still remembers the first concert he ever did at Lafayette, the Music in our School concert. “It was between Rockwood Valley Middle School and Lafayette. We only had 72 kids at that point and we have like 150,” Gutowski said. “I remember us playing music from West Side Story and it was definitely an experience.” Gutowski came to Lafayette from a smaller school where he taught all grade levels so it was an adjustment to only teach high school. The orchestras do get to play a variety of music, which allows students to experience different genres. “In general, our concerts have both the classic and pop bent to them,” Gutowski said. “This concert that’s coming up on the 12th we’ll have ironclad rock music and I think every single person in the audience will connect to that piece.” May 12 is the date of the spring concert this year, with a separate concert for alumni on May 21.
