She has a masters of education and human development from The George Washington University in Washington, DC, and has taught 3 years in public schools.
With words, images, personal outreach, and communications media, I will present your art to the community you wish to reach, earn media coverage, and help you make an impact through the passion of your unique artistic expression. Jan Swartzendruber earned a bachelor's degree in communication at Goshen College, Goshen, IN, and a masters of International Communication at The American University, Sc
hool of International Service, in Washington, DC. Jan was raised in Hesston, Kansas, and after completing her four-year degree and masters degree in communication, she lived in Southeast Asia for two years and in Gaborone, Botswana, for four years, where she worked promoting the work of non-profits. In Fairfax, VA, she worked as a journalist/writer/editor from 1986 to 2008. Back in Kansas, Jan worked as an organizer for MoveOn.org, honing her leadership and communication skills. She volunteered with Sunflower Community Action and served on the board of Sunflower's PAC, Kansas People's Action. In 2016, Jan switched her emphasis to "building bridges" of communication across cultures and faiths when she assisted the clergy-lay group, People of Faith for Peace, in hosting Building Bridges: Art Exhibition & Sale. Building Bridges was series of exhibits of Iraqi paintings loaned by the non-profit, Common Humanity. Sales of paintings and related merchandise totalled $6,000, which benefited the professional Iraqi painters. Jan reached viewers and buyers through brochures, a website, and media coverage on television, radio, in print, and -significantly - via word of mouth to friends of the exhibition's large group of co-planners. Jan continued to share news of local events promoting intercultural education and justice to a list of nearly 500 people in an e-letter. “Building Bridges: Constructive People Working for Safety and Solidarity for All.”
Jan has systematically tracked her media contacts, and her consistency has made her byline on press releases recognizable at The Wichita Eagle, KMUW public radio, and our local television networks KWCH, KSN, KAKE, and our public station, KPTS. Currently serving as board member for Regina Klenjoski Dance Company, Jan creates specialized media lists and knows the area's online events calendars and social media pages that reach the local fine arts audience. For your art, Jan will compile a dedicated list and put your message into the best words and images to reach your buyers. Let's collaborate to find people who will love your unique art that shares your truth!

It’s hard to solve cryptograms, but when I finally got this message, it’s meaning was pretty overwhelming, considering I spent half the day listening to the Wichita City Council hash out guardrails for using sales tax revenue and another half a day fetching a carload of second-hand ventriloqual puppets to satisfy a friend’s creative hobby. Who changes the world most?

A holiday invitation is my first reel in a long time! I had created Christmas promotion reels for my Airbnb two years ago, so the tree and other seasonal graphics were already saved in an Adobe Express project. Then I searched for a pot roast photo on the internet and found the perfect one!

What a tragedy that I could answer this crossword clue when doing my nightly bedtime puzzle and watching updates on the horrible California inferno!

My beloved egress window went from digging to done on December 10, 2024, in under eight hours! It makes it possible to get a City of Wichita short-term rental license for Jan’s Art Nest, my Airbnb!

In Lindsborg, KS, the paint on Birger Sandzen’s canvases is powerfully textured in a rainbow of colors. When you back away 15 feet, the scene dominates. Up close, the, bold 3-D exuberance of the painter’s reality dominates! A flat reproduction can’t convey the energy of these thickly covered yet vibrating canvasses.

Watch KAKE TV’s story on reactions to the likely nomination of Kamala Harris as Democratic nominee for president here:
Booker said he wanted to wait to endorse any potential new candidates, but says he'll be happy to support whoever the party nominates, to unify the party.

WHAT IS PUBLIC ART? Description from the Public Art Consultant ad (below): "The "City has initiated a contract to design improvements for the west bank of the Arkansas River. Generally, these improvements include sea wall edge, multi-purpose pathways, terraces, retaining walls, lighting, seating and landscape improvements to the bank.
"This is a continuation of an ongoing process to improve the riverfront through downtown Wichita which started with the raising of the Keeper of the Plains at the confluence of the Little Arkansas and Big Arkansas rivers and addition of pedestrian bridges. Public art integration has been an important part of each phase of this work and is of primary importance for this phase as well." (For more details, see my link in previous post for the Consultant Ad.)

Jan Swartzendruber has worked for non-profit causes all her life, developing her gift for connecting with people and articulating the rationale for action. Raised in Hesston, Kansas, Jan completed her two- and four-year degrees at Hesston College and Goshen College, respectively; earned a master’s degree in international communication at the School of International Service, The American University, in Washington, DC; and a Master’s of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University.
Jan has travelled in the Caribbean, Great Britain and Europe, and lived in Vientiane, Laos, for two years and in Gaborone, Botswana, for four years. She speaks useful amounts of Spanish, French, Haitian Creole, Setswana, and Lao.
Jan began offering communications help to political campaigns in 2004, while living in Fairfax, VA, from 1986 to 2008 and working as a journalist/writer/editor in the Washington, DC, area.
Jan returned home to Hesston, KS, in 2008, worked for several school districts, and married Floyd Saunders in October 2011. While living first in Andover and then in Wichita, KS, Jan became Kansas Regional Organizer for MoveOn.org in 2012, and was trained in event planning, managing volunteers, and recruiting via email and phone, as she supported MoveOn Councils in Topeka and Kansas City, KS, and helped plan statewide events.
Jan involved Wichitans in numerous MoveOn.org national campaigns on issues as diverse as underwater mortgages and money in politics. She has worked on an international team advocating fair trade, national campaigns advocating expansion of Medicaid, and Kansas legislation to tax businesses fairly, fund public education, and overturn restrictive voter registration requirements. Through volunteering with Sunflower Community Action and serving on the board of Sunflower's 501-c-4, Kansas People's Action, Jan added to her Wichita network and learned more organizing and campaign skills.
In October 2015, Jan switched her emphasis to "building bridges" of communication with the Wichita Muslim community when the clergy-lay group, People of Faith for Peace, agreed to host a series of exhibits of Iraqi paintings loaned by the non-profit, Common Humanity. With support from gallery directors Lisa Rundstrom at Wichita State and Rachel Epp-Buller at Bethel College, 81 paintings were transported from New York City to Kansas in June 2016, and displayed at four galleries. Sales of paintings and related merchandise totalled $6,000, of which 80 percent benefitted the professional Iraqi artists whose work was shown.
The Building Bridges exhibition created a long lasting network of people whose friendships have given internationally-minded people the foundation to continue promoting solidarity across minority groups.
For Jan, a “good cause” is news of events promoting international education and justice, particularly to interrupt a national narrative of hate, defeating it with tangible stories of love. Her personal mailing list for the Building Bridges e-letter includes over 400 people whom she calls Bridge Builders because of their interest in friendships among diverse people.
Jan tracks and cultivates her personal contacts with each Wichita TV station's or newspaper's reporters. Her thorough but efficient press releases has made her byline recognizable at The Wichita Eagle, KMUW and KSUN radio, television stations KWCH, KSN, and KAKE. Jan's appearances on television news as a spokesperson for causes and groups advocating compassion and justice are part of her credentials for advising you on dealing with local media.
