Follow the Light
Follow the Light is a 12 x 12 oil painting that conveys a message of strength and resilience. Much like a portrait artist approaches their subject, I treat the sunflower as an individual with its own story and presence. Through this piece, I aim to remind viewers that no matter what challenges life brings, we have the capacity to endure and always face the light, just like the sunflower.
The inspiration for this painting came from the striking contrast between the dark, almost traumatic background and the vibrant colors of the sunflower. This sharp juxtaposition drew me in and inspired me to explore the theme of overcoming adversity through light and color. I chose bold and contrasting hues to make the painting stand out, emphasizing the sunflower?s powerful presence against a difficult backdrop. The lighting enhances this contrast and reinforces the idea of turning toward brightness even in dark times.
Creating this work was a true labor of love. The process was meticulous, involving detailed work such as painting over 100 tiny hairs on the sunflower?s stem and delicate water droplets. These details were challenging but allowed me to connect deeply with the subject, much like capturing the personality and essence of a portrait sitter. Though intricate and time-consuming, these elements bring the sunflower to life and strengthen the overall message.
When viewers encounter Follow the Light, I hope they feel inspired to recognize their own strength and resilience. I want them to reflect on the power of positivity and the importance of facing toward the light, regardless of their circumstances. This painting holds a special place in my artistic journey as it reflects my ongoing exploration of symbolism, emotional contrast, and the celebration of hope amidst struggle?approaching nature not just as a subject, but as a portrait that tells a story
