How you build websites directly affects your customers. Are you making their day better or worse?

I had a great conversation with Jim at Captivation Agency on his new Resonate podcast. We talked all about web accessibility, how you can make it a doable part of your processes, and why it matters.

I drop some pretty decent truth bombs, too. ;)

Are you under the mistaken impression that prospective college students are NOT looking at your website? Guess again.

64% of graduating seniors say that a university’s website is their primary research source. If you have been putting off your web accessibility, you are actively excluding students and saying you don’t care about them.

How bad could this be? The average higher education website has 48.9 accessibility errors on its homepage alone.

Want to know what mistakes you could be making? In this week’s blog, we break down the common web accessibility errors on a college website and how to fix them.

Don’t forget - fixing these issues directly impacts your enrollment, search engine visibility, brand reputation, and legal compliance.

The colors on your website might keep someone from converting.

While you may think some of your brand colors look great together, they may not be accessible to everyone, especially people with low vision or color blindness.

Make sure everyone can read the great content on your website by using free tools like WebAim's contrast checker to test those color combinations. They need to have a 4.5:1 ratio and you are good to go!

Images are one of the biggest offenders in slowing down your website and making it inaccessible. Are you taking the extra minute to ensure they are properly optimized before you upload them to your website?

You can't just upload something straight from the camera, iPhone, or from your photographer.

You have to follow certain steps every time you add a new image to your website. Just one overly large, unoptimized image can slow your website down or ping in an accessibility review.

Want to make this a part of your regular process? Grab my free Image Optimization Cheat Sheet. It has everything you need to ensure your images are not the problem on your website. Get it now at https://go.captcoder.com/cheat-sheet

Love the recent pictures your campus photographer is getting? It’s time to use them! But, are you taking the correct steps to ensure you are not slowing down your website?

You’ve got to optimize your images. This search engine basic is often overlooked, but a huge key to providing a frictionless browsing experience. Let’s not forget, you have mere seconds for your website to load, or those prospective students are going elsewhere.

And here’s the thing - the steps we take to optimize images also improve the overall accessibility of those images, too. Without these steps, not only can your website run slowly, but you can also expose your organization to unnecessary legal and ethical risks.

Ready to solve this problem? In this week’s blog, we break down the full image optimization strategy you need to balance beautiful websites and technical performance

I talk to a lot of people who feel like web accessibility just isn't doable. There is so much to learn and they feel overwhelmed.

Worse is when they go to an expert to learn and that expert makes it feel even more difficult.

Here's the truth: there are a ton of things that go into accessibility compliance. Lots of little nuances that can feel like a lot to even someone who has been doing this for 13 years.

But the reality is that if you just focus on the basic best practices, you are doing pretty well! Many web developers, agencies, and marketing teams neglect easy things that take just a few seconds to implement. Those are the things that tend to show up in automated scans, too, which are the red flags people look for in filing lawsuits.

Want to learn accessibility the easy way? Hit that follow button. I talk about the simple steps you can take to make web accessibility easy.

Be honest with me: you love using Canva to create social media graphics.

Hey, I get it. Marketing teams have to move fast, and Canva has made that easier and easier over the years.

But those designs you’re rapidly creating could be excluding up to 27% of your potential audience.

Want to reach everyone? You have to follow some basic accessibility best practices every time you create a design in Canva.

Step 1: Test your colors. You need to aim for a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 with your font and background colors.

Step 2: Choose the right fonts and sizes. Your text should be at least 16px (larger honestly on social), and serif fonts tend to be more readable.

Step 3: Add ALT text. Yes, right in your Canva designs! This works for presentations, PDFs, HTML, and design share links now.

Step 4: Download your PDFs correctly. Make sure you don't check the flatten or compress PDF options.

Step 5: Select safe video templates. Avoid videos with more than 3 flashes in a single second or super-rapid transitions.

There's not a ton of point in creating beautiful assets that exclude your best customers. These basic accessibility steps ensure that all of your designs are usable by everyone.

Are you losing students to competitors because you’re ignoring this key thing? Read on to find out.

Higher education is in a state of flux (that’s putting it mildly). More and more colleges and universities are struggling for enrollment and funding. But if your website is not accessible to everyone, you are actively excluding potential students.

Why are you making the first things people interact with difficult for them to use? Your website is often where a student first gets a sense of whether they want to attend your school. Worse news for you, 63% of adult learners will leave a school website that isn’t user-friendly.

Web accessibility is not only an ethical and legal requirement, but also how you demonstrate your inclusive values to your students. If you have been waiting for Title II Part H to kick in, you are actively losing students to competitors.

Stop letting your marketing funnels leak great students. In this week’s blog, we look at how web accessibility is a competitive advantage in higher education.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak for NXTUS , teaching their attendees the website basics that lead to conversions and sales.

Not only did they get worksheets to fill out as I talked (which one attendee called her best hour spent ever at an event! 💅 ) but some brave business owners let us take a look at their websites to see quick things they could improve.

There are a million ways to build a website, and technology changes rapidly. What hasn't changed? Those core basics that help your website actually connect with your customer.

Excited to see the changes these amazing entrepreneurs implement!
