Texas Ranch Roundup It all started here… we are the Original Ranch Rodeo… celebrating 45 years of showcasing working ranch history! For more information on the rules click here.

The Texas Ranch Roundup is the “original” event designed to replicate the big cattle roundups of the late 1800s and early 1900s, and, in 1981 was the first of the hundreds of ranch rodeos that now occur all over North America. The first event committee determined that the participating ranches would be full-time, historic Texas cattle ranches, and that the participants would be only owners, full t

ime hands, and immediate family members. They also determined that the ranch families should be involved outside the arena to showcase real ranch life and the talents that exist in the families. The committee also developed the rules that are, for the most part, followed throughout the world of ranch rodeos today. The voting members of the committee are the designated representatives from each of the participating ranches. While many of the rules have been tweaked over the years, the event has held to its core principles. The legacy of the great Texas ranches, the integrity of the participants, and the ranches’ dedication to the benefitting charities has made the event successful beyond the wildest dreams of the founding group.

Our hearts are heavy as we remember Peggy—a woman whose life and legacy are forever woven into the story of the Texas Ranch Roundup. From the very beginning, Peggy and her family have been part of TRR, and her husband’s role in helping create the ranch rodeo laid the foundation for what we cherish today.

But Peggy was so much more than that history—she was warmth, grace and a steady presence who meant so much to so many. She represented the very spirit of TRR: family, tradition, and community.

We will miss her dearly and we hold her family close in our thoughts and prayers. 🤍

Peggy Ray Donnell Brown passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at her home in Throckmorton, Texas. She was born March 15, 1937, to Polly (Ray) Donnell and Alfred Donnell. Peggy was raised on the Clearfork of the Brazos River near Eliasville,Texas on her family's ranch, which the Donnell family established in 1876.

Peggy made her mark as a woman in agriculture at a young age. Growing up, she raised and showed Hereford steers. At the time, girls were not allowed to show in the youth stock shows. So young Peggy, sporting her pigtails, showed against grown men in the open division. Peggy met the love of her life, R.A. “Rob” Brown Jr., when she was 14 years old. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1955 and attended Texas Tech University from 1955 -1958.

Rob and Peggy were married June 14, 1957. In 1958, they returned to the R.A. Brown Ranch in Throckmorton and raised their four children.

Ranch life is all she ever knew, the life she loved and preferred. Born the daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of ranchers, she went on to raise children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the ranch. Peggy’s fortitude, intellect, support, and grit shaped the R.A. Brown Ranch into the industry leader it is today. Her job description over the last nearly seven decades was "anything that needs doing".

Peggy and Rob were true partners on the ranch. Their hard work and vision earned the ranch many honors and recognitions in the ranching industry over the years including, Texas Simmental Family of the Year, Texas Family Land Heritage Award, NCBA Cattle Business of the Century, NCBA Vision award, AQHA Best Remuda and many others.

While managing the ranch office and raising a family, Peggy also spent her time in service to others. She taught Sunday School at the Throckmorton Methodist Church for 28 years and served on the Throckmorton school board. She was an active volunteer for FFA and 4-H, being honored with the 4-H Distinguished Service Award and Honorary American FFA Degree. Peggy served on the Texas Tech Human Sciences Dean's Advisory Board and National Ranching Heritage Board of Directors. Most recently, Peggy was honored with the Texas Tech Outstanding Agriculturalist Award.

Peggy's greatest joy was always her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmom, great-grandmom, sister and aunt. Peggy was a loyal wife to Rob for 68 years. Together they built a beautiful family and successful business. Peggy’s children are grateful for the high expectations and work ethic she instilled in each of them. Sharing meals around the table as a family was of highest priority to Peggy as a mother. Just as she loved adventures with her brother George as a child, she shared this love with her grandchildren; checking mares and foals, picking wild plums, building forts in the mesquites, making mud pies in the sandpile, and more. Grandmom was always up for an adventure.

Anyone who knew Peggy called her friend. Peggy loved people well and had a unique talent of finding “small world” connections no matter where she went. She had a gift for lovingly intertwining her life with all of those she came in contact with.

Her love for the Lord was most evident in her life. Peggy was a mighty prayer warrior. She was full of wisdom; wisdom rooted in scripture. In 2023, Peggy suffered a life-altering stroke. Her speech and motor skills were severely affected, but even through these trying circumstances her faith and prayer life were steadfast.

Peggy's hard work ethic and love for others made an impact on everyone around her. Anyone who knew Peggy was inspired by her. She loved the Lord, loved her family, and brought joy to all who knew her. Peggy Brown truly embodied the Proverbs 31 woman.

Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, and husband, R.A. “Rob” Brown Jr. She is survived by her children Betsy Bellah and husband Jody of Throckmorton, Rob A. Brown and wife Talley of Stinnett, Texas, Marianne McCartney and husband Todd of Throckmorton, and Donnell Brown and wife Kelli of Throckmorton. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, brother George Donnell, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. The family expresses gratitude for the love and care provided to Peggy by her caregivers Rachel, Sarah, Monna, and Jackie.

The family will receive friends Saturday, April 25, from 3:00-4:30 pm at the First Methodist Church at 220 N. Reynolds in Throckmorton, Texas. She will be laid to rest in the Brown Family Cemetery at a private family burial. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Methodist Church in Throckmorton 2:00 pm Sunday April 26.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Methodist Church PO Box 686 Throckmorton, TX 76483, Ranching Heritage Association 3121 Fourth St. Lubbock, TX 79329, or West Texas Rehabilitation Center 4601 Hartford Abilene, TX 79605.

Our hearts are with the Brown family as we remember R.A. “Rob” Brown, Jr.—a true leader, cowboy and friend to all who love the Texas Ranch Roundup. His vision helped shape the Texas Ranch Roundup and preserve the spirit of working cowboys for generations to come.

R.A. “Rob” Brown, Jr. of Throckmorton, Texas, passed away peacefully Friday, November 7, 2025.

Rob was born on April 4, 1936, to Valda (Thomas) Brown and R.A. Brown Sr. He was the fourth generation raised on the family’s R.A. Brown Ranch, where his love of the land and livestock began. His children and grandchildren loved hearing him reminisce of his childhood adventures of cowboying, hunting, and fishing.

He graduated from Throckmorton High School in 1954, where he enjoyed athletics, stock showing, and rodeoing. At the age of fifteen, he met the love of his life, Peggy Donnell.

Rob and Peggy pursued their degrees at Texas Tech University in the 1950s where they were both active leaders in multiple student organizations. They married in 1957. Rob earned his B.S. in Animal Husbandry in 1958 while battling dyslexia before much was known about its challenges. He attributes his diploma to the help of his beloved Peg. Their love and service to Texas Tech has been passed down through generations and recently earned the family the inaugural Texas Tech Davis College Family Legacy Award.

After graduation, they returned to the family ranch and raised their four children. Over the decades, Rob cemented the diverse legacy of the R.A. Brown Ranch with a Quarter Horse breeding program focused on meeting a cowboy’s needs; seedstock herds of various cattle breeds; commercial cow-calf herds; as well as stocker, cattle feeding, and wheat farming operations. While they were busy running a ranch and raising a family, they modeled service and leadership. Rob was a leader and innovator in the ranching industry holding national roles including AQHA President and Director, NCBA Director, TSCRA Director, American Simmental Association President among others. Rob received industry honors including being inducted into the Livestock Industry Hall of Fame Saddle and Sirloin Club, the AQHA Hall of Fame, honored as the nation’s top rancher with the Golden Spur Award, and many other recognitions in the agriculture industry. He helped establish the Texas Ranch Roundup, the world’s first ranch rodeo, as an effort to maintain the traditions of cowboys and working horses, while raising money for local charities.

Rob was an avid outdoorsman and had many memorable hunting and fishing adventures with family and friends. He shared this love with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren leaving them with many special memories and life lessons. Always a dog lover, Rob raised many a ranch terrier and bird dog. Rob was passionate about the ranch, and “making a circle” in his red Ford pickup was a daily necessity even in his later years. Checking his mares and foals was his favorite circle to make, proudly pointing out his prized gray horses.

Above all, Rob adored his wife, Peggy. Out of all of his many achievements, his greatest pride was his family. He loved them deeply and never hesitated to express his love in words and an occasional “whisker kiss” for the grandkids.

A lifetime member of the First Methodist Church, Rob’s deep voice could be heard each

Sunday reciting the Lord’s Prayer from his regular pew. The large mesquite cross hanging in the front of the sanctuary was handmade by Rob. He had a strong faith that carried him through life’s challenges. His signature mealtime blessing is imprinted on his family’s hearts, “...guide us and direct us. Help us to be of Thy service and do Thy will. Amen.” In his later years he shared that he knew his time was coming, and he would be with Jesus soon.

Rob is preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Marianne Merrick Bachman.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Peggy Brown, and children Betsy Bellah and husband Jody of Throckmorton, Rob A. Brown and wife Talley of Stinnett, Texas, Marianne McCartney and husband Todd of Throckmorton, and Donnell Brown and wife Kelli of Throckmorton. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law George Donnell, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family expresses gratitude for the love and care provided to Rob by his caregivers Rachel, Sarah, Monna, and Jackie.

The family will receive friends Monday, November 10, from 4:30 - 6:00 at the First Methodist Church in Throckmorton, Texas, 220 N. Reynolds.

He will be laid to rest in the Brown Family Cemetery at a private family burial Tuesday, November 11 at 10:00. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Methodist Church in Throckmorton at 11:00. Following the service, everyone is invited to a time of fellowship with the family and a meal for all at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Methodist Church PO Box 686 Throckmorton, TX 76483, Ranching Heritage Association 3121 Fourth St. Lubbock, TX 79329, or West Texas Rehab 4601 Hartford Abilene, TX 79605.
