Senior Mingle Day with Downey!

This week, our Whittier seniors visited the Barbara J. Riley Community and Senior Center in Downey, CA, for a day filled with good food, good company, and plenty of fun.

Activities included a birdhouse craft, a delicious chicken Alfredo lunch, and of course…LOTS of dancing! 💃🐦🏠

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the day so much fun, and thank you to City of Downey Parks and Recreation for hosting us!

We love seeing our seniors get together, try something new, and have a good time! 💙

Hey Whittier! Fall is just around the corner, which means it’s time to register for the Junior Theater Fall Workshop 🎭

Junior Theatre Fall Workshop is a hands-on theater experience designed to help young performers build confidence, communication, creativity, and teamwork through fun, engaging theatre activities.

Participants will get to:
🎲 Break the ice and build connections through interactive games
🤝 Strengthen communication and trust through partner exercises
💡 Put creativity and quick thinking to the test with improvisation
🕺 Explore movement, expression, and ensemble-building activities
🧩 Work together through collaborative challenges and problem-solving

🎭 Ages 12–18

We’re still not over the 2026 Concerts in the Park season!

We had a little bit of everything in the parks this summer, from the Latin sounds of Anything for Salinas and Mariachi Jalisco, to Beatles classics with Hard Day’s Night, Y2K hits with Y2K2K!, reggae from Upstream, beach tunes with Woodie and the Longboards, and country favorites from Faultline. 🎸

AUDITIONS THIS SUNDAY! ✨🎄

Registration is officially open for Whittier’s 27th anniversary Nutcracker Ballet, and it’s time to step into the holiday magic! 🩰

Ages 5 and up are invited to audition and be part of this longtime Whittier holiday tradition.

AUDITIONS: Sunday, August 30
📍 Whittier Community Center — Fitness Room (7630 Washington Ave)

1:00–2:00 PM — Ages 5–7
2:00–3:00 PM — Ages 8–10
3:00–4:00 PM — Ages 11–12
4:00–5:00 PM — Ages 13–35
5:00–6:00 PM — Ages 12+ Pointe

REHEARSALS:
Sundays between 1:00–7:00 PM, with rehearsal times varying based on casting. Dancers will rehearse for approximately 1–2 hours during their assigned time.

October 4, 11, 18, 25
November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
December 6, 13, 14, 15 & 16

Celebrate Grandparents Day with + Whittier Public Library!

The City of Whittier Parks, Recreation & Community Services Department’s Senior Services Division is teaming up with the Whittier Public Library for our first-ever Grandparents Day celebration on Saturday, September 12, 2026!

Grandparents and grandchildren are invited to spend the morning together enjoying FREE activities planned by both PRCS and Library staff, including:

📚 Multiple storytimes led by Whittier Public Library
🎨 Face painting
📸 Selfie photo station
✂️ A special craft activity
🍽️ Lunch
✨ And more!

This FREE event is open to adults ages 55+ and their grandchildren ages 3+. Each grandparent may register with up to three grandchildren.

Today, we’re celebrating Whittier’s amazing seniors! The past year has brought plenty of fun and good times at events like our Senior Ball, Senior Luau, holiday celebrations, group trips, and much more!

The countdown is ON! We are officially ONE MONTH away from Chalktastic! 🌈✨

On September 19th, artists of all ages are invited to transform a 4x4-foot concrete square into their own masterpiece!

Registration is FREE! Each registered artist receives a chalk kit and kneeling pad. 🙌
