Jeanie & Stephen Foster Vocal Competition

Jeanie & Stephen Foster Vocal Competition An auditioned singing event to honor S.F.'s music! hosted by Federated Music Clubs of Florida and the Stephen Foster Folk Cultural Center in White Springs.

Founded in 1951, The Stephen & Jeanie Foster Vocal Competition is an annual audition and scholarship event for young singers to learn about and honour the music of the infamous 19th century American composer Stephen C. Foster. Vocalists of all types ages 17 to 24 are invited to compete. Contact your local florida federated music club to enquire about upcoming audition dates, or visit our website:

http://www.ffmc-music.org/jeanie.htm

from our "history of the auditions" section:
The idea for the Stephen Foster/Jeanie Auditions originated in December, 1951 to encourage promising young Florida female vocal students. The first music scholarship award was presented to the winning Jeanie in 1954 by Stephen Foster’s closest living relative, Evelyn Foster Morneweck. Since 2006, the auditions have also been open to male contestants as well due to the generous endowment by Connie Tuttle-Lill. The Jeanie/Stephen Auditions are sponsored by the Florida Federation of Music Clubs and will be held at the Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center in White Springs, Florida in conjunction with National Stephen Foster Day celebrated the third weekend in January. Qualified judges select two female finalists. One is crowned Jeanie with award of $1,500, and the Jeanie Maid receives award of $1,000. These same judges also select two male vocalists, one to receive the Stephen title with award of $1,500 and the runner-up receives $1,000. Our hope is that these scholarship winners will use their awards to continue their vocal studies.

Hey y'all, just to let you know, the auditions committee chose to not rename the competition.

There were quite a few opinions about this in our comments and DMs, but apparently, they didn't seem to get counted. If you'd like to give your input, you're absolutely welcome to! As a state-funded organization, Florida Federated Music Clubs relies on public input to determine how to provide music in the best way it can! Please email jeanie@ffmc_music.org with any questions or concerns as to why the competition was not renamed. :)

Have you checked out Boulanger Initiative's posts? For people interested in our previous composer post, it's a great way to learn more about women composers!

Beginning with the first black woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, Florence Price was an American composer who fought for recognition in a world plagued by segregation, Jim Crow, and sexism. After being denied entry to the Arkansas Music Teachers Association, Florence created her own Little Rock Club of Musicians to teach to the segregated schools in her community. This kind of initiative and determination led her to compose over 300 works and gain first prize at The 1932 Wanamaker Competition for her Symphony in E minor. Check out this piece below!

Black Classically-Trained Singers of History (specifically, American History)
It's Black Music month in the US, so it's a great time to familiarize ourselves with the musicians that paved the way for us to perform today! There are sooooo many more singers to highlight (slide 18); we just chose a handful. If you'd like us to follow up, give us a like or a comment, telling us which performer you love.

Thank you Wallis Giunta for sharing!

"Too bad you're black." No, I didn’t choose that title in order to be provocative or controversial. It’s a direct quote from a conductor that is/was the music director of a small Midwestern American opera company.

We urge you to listen to 1619 (via The New York Times), specifically this episode on the birth of American music.

In the discussion of blackface and minstrelsy, one of our namesakes, Stephen Foster, is mentioned--you might remember, he wrote for the fairly popular New-York based Edward Pierce Christy's touring ensemble "Christy's Minstrels". We invite you to learn a bit more about Stephen Foster and his contributions to American Music as contextualised in this podcast.

Thank you Ashlee on instagram for reminding us of this resource!

For centuries, black music has been an expression of artistic freedom. No wonder everybody is always stealing it.

There are a lot of discussions happening regarding race and prejudice, especially in music! We wanted to add to the conversation by bringing Black American composers of Classical Music and their works to light as a resource to educate and inspire. Just as the United States is inherently dependent on the contributions and innovations of Black people, these composers have contributed an extraordinary amount to the development of American music.

There's so much more to say on the matter, and so much research to explore and cite, but ultimately, we hope this post will encourage you to take action--whether donating to organizations that promote Black musicians (slide 23), seeking out and performing music by Black composers (slide 22), learning more about the prejudices these composers faced by reading further (slides 16-21) or simply, taking the step to engage in difficult conversations about race, equality, and justice, and to learn more.

If you have a favorite composer whose music or life inspires you, let us know in the comments.

Black lives matter.
Part II, Black Vocalists in Classical Music, is underway.

**EDIT 6/15 Hey y'all, kindly disregard the weird grammar, capitalization & tense mistakes throughout. Feel free to correct phrases!**
