Many animals at the Good Zoo, including Magellan the black and white ruffed lemur, enjoy browsing as a form of enrichment. 🌿

While we don’t have the same tree species these lemurs would find in Madagascar, our zoo team has identified a variety of trees throughout Oglebay that are safe for them to eat. This gives Magellan and other browsing animals the opportunity to forage and enjoy a natural behavior right here at the Good Zoo.

You could say Magellan knows a thing or two about getting his leafy greens! 🥬

Happy International Golden Lion Tamarin Day!😊
Golden lion tamarins were on the brink of extinction in the 1970s, with an estimated 200 individuals remaining. This decline was largely caused by massive deforestation and the illegal pet trade. The species was able to survive due to a breeding and release program conducted in collaboration with zoos and the Brazilian government. Today, about half of the wild population is descended from zoo-raised individuals, with a total population of around 5,000. GLTs are still listed as endangered because only 2% of their natural habitat remains. However, efforts to reforest their habitats are underway and have been successful so far!
The Good Zoo is proud to participate in the Golden Lion Tamarin Species Survival Plan (SSP), a breeding program that acts as a safeguard for wild populations, with several sets of babies born over the years. You can help protect golden lion tamarins by visiting the Good Zoo and the GLT family!
