Wheaton Grand Theater

Wheaton Grand Theater We're restoring our 1925 historic theater. Concerts, Performing Arts, Special Events and more. Join us! James D.

Atten has entered into an agreement with the theater’s owner, Elmhurst-based Suburban Bank & Trust. The buyer and seller have agreed on the terms of the sale, and a plan is in place to finalize the deal with a November 30, 2012 closing date. The property has been on the market since the spring of 2011, and Rick Erickson, owner of Bold Steps, Inc. and spokesman for Atten, has been part of a local c

ommunity effort to save the theater. “While there is still a lot of work to do, we’re excited to move forward,” Erickson said. The theater will require significant work to restore it to its former glory, and plans for the future of the building are currently in the works. The space may combine both a performing arts and movie theater, and the hope is that it will become a hub of entertainment and activity in the downtown community. Either way, Atten intends to preserve the building’s historic look and feel. The Wheaton Grand Theater opened in 1925 with 1,000 seats and closed in the late-1990’s as a second-run movie house. After changing ownership in 2002, it reopened as a venue for concerts, classic film screenings and other community events before finally closing in 2006. The effort to preserve and restore the old theater has received significant support from residents and community leadership alike. I attended John Prendiville's kickoff (he's running for mayor) last night at Emmett's and it was good. Class act, smart, good listener, strong grasp of the issues, measured, approachable, friendly ... experienced. Big crowd and time very well spent!

OK, what was your favorite experience at the (1925) Wheaton Grand Theater? Don't worry if it was your first kiss, you're not alone!

Meeting with Jim Atten next week to discuss the status of the Wheaton Grand Theater. Looking forward to it.

Have you heard about Reflections Framed?

Reflections Framed is absolutely FREE and is a celebration of military service, past and present.

Here’s how it works

1. We ask people in our community to reflect on a military service memory from either their time in service or time spent by someone they know and love. The subject can be from any branch of service, retired or active, alive or long passed, and may have a simple story or a dramatic one to tell.

2. They submit their Reflection in one of two ways:

a. By completing an online form at http://www.helpaveteran.org/reflections/index.htm;

b. By picking up a physical form at the Wheaton Public Library and completing and returning it there;

In both cases, the submitter includes a short story, a picture, a caption for the picture, and optionally an audio tape of a reading of the short story. These elements make up the Reflection.

3. Bob Greene (DuPage Framing Center) then beautifully frames the Reflection.

4. Betsy Adamowski's Wheaton Public Library team digitally archives the Reflection so it is available for generations to come.

5. On Veterans Day (November 11), at Wheaton College's Coray Alumni Gymnasium, from 4-6PM, each Reflection Framed is delivered to its rightful owner (and/or their family and friends) by Wheaton College ROTC cadets in a wonderful, open-to-everyone celebration.

6. All proceeds go to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton.

7. The deadline to submit is October 19, 2015 with the first 100 Reflections framed for FREE.

"No Reflection left behind!"

Too often we leave our stories on living room couches or at our favorite "watering holes" - but once the story teller is gone, often, and sadly, so too is the story, the Reflection. Don't let the happen.

Our inaugural event in 2014

Last year was our inaugural, and it was truly moving. 56 Reflections were submitted, framed, presented, and celebrated. Music … color guard … big screens with a selection of videotaped Reflections playing … time to walk around and share stories and celebrate!

What a gift!

So, do you have a Reflection? Does your father/mother, grandfather/grandmother, brother/sister, or friend/colleague have one? Can you submit it for them if they need help or are no longer with us? With the holidays coming up fast, what a great gift, and FREE!

"Who's leading this?"

A group of local leaders met in 2014 and agreed that we could do more to lift up our community's heart for service, in this case, its heart for service to our country.

Sponsorships of all shapes and sizes are available!

If you have an interest in sponsoring Reflections Framed 2015 please let me know. I'd love to talk to you!

Why not in the Wheaton Grand Theater?

Someday we'll host Reflections Framed in the Wheaton Grand Theater! I know a guy who can help make that happen.

Have a great week everyone!

Hello everyone.

I'm sorry it's been so quiet lately, but we are working on the "boring stuff", like securing a long term lease for the Grand Theater Corporation so we can start the Miracle on Hale Street engines in earnest.

And speaking of the Miracle on Hale Street, hats off to River City Roasters who are donating 50% of their bag sales of freshly roasted Wheaton Grand Theater coffee ("Hale 123") to the Grand Theater Corporation NFP.

Thanks Erich, Tyler, and the RCR team for your support!

Stay tuned for more updates as we have them.

Hey everyone!

Had the pleasure, just now, of meeting the new board president of Wheaton Drama, Mike Boyna, and discussing partnership opportunities over a cold Dry City Brew Works beer. Then a tour of the Wheaton Grand Theater.

It's not hard to imagine a theatre district developing downtown, with the WGT, Wheaton Drama, Wheaton College, and maybe even the improv group on Front Street joining forces, collaborating on programming schedules, etc.

Below is summary data from the WGT programming survey that's been running. If you haven't taken the survey, please do so. Let your voice be heard! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Wgt-programming-survey

The pictures below represent survey data to date for concerts, shows and special events.

Enjoy!

Hello everyone.

I had a great time at Emmet's Ale House Ribbon Cutting last night (Front Street, Wheaton). Earlier I met Andy (one of the owners) and had a chance to talk WGT and our awareness raising "takeover" strategy. Andy is up for hosting our next takeover - where we invite the community to come in and hear about the theater, the restoration, the plans, and to provide feedback. Participants will also get a chance to sample some of Emmet's finest as they share their thoughts. I'll send an update in the next few days on date and time. Thanks Andy!

I also met with KlearSky who are volunteering their services to give the WGT website a much needed refresh. KlearSky is also in the business of implementing / integrating theater specific technology and we are in discussions on that. Thanks Lori and Ivan - who happen to have an office on Hale Street in downtown Wheaton (just south of Liberty).

These are just two examples of businesses that are supporting the Miracle on Hale Street, in different, but important ways.

Have a great week!

Hello Wheaton Grand Theater supporters!

Please brace yourself for a long(ish) update on what's going on with the Miracle on Hale Street - the Wheaton Grand Theater restoration project.

Jim Atten is tackling some long standing roofing issues. Way to go Jim!

The Grand Theater Corporation (the NFP who will be running the theater) is looking to finalize the lease soon. Really collaborative process throughout. It's nice to have a building owner with deep roots in Wheaton and a heart for restoration to work with.

The Grand Theater Corporation Board met last night, under the leadership of Mike Phillips, and it was productive.

Also, we are looking at a new design that provides a seating capacity of 847 (up from 556). This number will position us to more easily attract bigger acts. Bigger venue > bigger acts > bigger audiences > more visitors coming to our transforming town. What's not to like? Draft design available below.

If you haven't already done so, please complete this simple survey and share your thoughts on our programming strategy. We want to hear from you! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Wgt-programming-survey

Finally, it's official, Wheaton's Got Talent 2.0 (a fundraiser for the WGT) will be happening November 21 at Wheaton North! Jim Murphy is taking the lead on this, and would love some help. If interested, please send a note to: [email protected]. More as this develops and be prepared to strut your stuff on the 21st!

That's it, and have a grand weekend!

Just a reminder . . . we're holding a WGT programming focus group tomorrow at Dry City Brew Works from 6-8 pm. Who knows, maybe we'll do a tour afterwards. Feel free to join us!

Don't know where Dry City Brew Works is? It's right behind the Wheaton Grand Theater (but of course!)

Hey Miracle team - it's time for a takeover!

That's right, we're taking over Dry City Brew Works on Tuesday, July 7, from 6-8 pm to talk WGT programming!

We're looking for 25-30 people for this first round of what will be a series of WGT focus group sessions. Who knows who we'll take over next?!

These focus groups will help us shape the WGT programming strategy so we achieve the promise of "something for everyone!"

Interested in joining us on the 7th? Just let me know!
