A new study published in the journal PeerJ suggests that Tyrannosaurus rex may have taken about 40 years to reach its full size, much longer than the previously estimated 25 years. Researchers analyzed growth rings inside fossilized leg bones from 17 tyrannosaur specimens, using advanced imaging and statistical methods to reconstruct the dinosaur’s growth over time. The findings indicate that T. rex likely grew gradually over several decades before reaching a weight of roughly eight tons. Scientists also discovered previously overlooked growth rings using circularly polarized light, which may change how dinosaur growth studies are conducted. According to the research reported by PeerJ, the study also raises the possibility that some fossils previously labeled as T. rex could actually belong to different but closely related species.
