Come join the fun at Music City BMX. We play in the dirt, we catch lizards, we get outside! No one sits the bench~Everyone rides.
BMX is for ALL ages! First-time riders are free. We have rental bikes and helmets to use. Please have knees and elbows covered.

I started skating again about 10 years ago at age 30. The first few months were rough, but after some time I recall thinking to myself: “skateboarding just makes more sense now.”

When I started linking up with more adult skateboarders, I’d hear the same thing: tricks just making more sense and some quickly surpassing previous skill levels and even peaking in their late 30s and 40s.

“Performance” is an interesting thing to think about as we age. On one hand, training and diet can drastically improve physical deterioration, but physical differences between age 20 and 60 will be profound regardless.

But on the other hand, we have cognitive performance which actually seems to improve as we age. Specifically, emotional stability and crystallized intelligence or accumulated knowledge.

In a 2025 study, researches developed a measure of “functional intelligence” where they suggested that there may be a peak in overall functioning around ages 55-60 and that ages 40-65 included individuals best suited for high stakes decision making.

I found this study fascinating in relation to adult skateboarding. Although we might not be “as gnarly” in our later years, we are probably more suited for realistic trick selection, session duration, personal health practices, and how skateboarding integrates into our sense of well-bing overall.
