You know a pair of socks is a success when your partner steals them before you can get a proper photo.

I present: the Purple Jamboree Shorties. Sassy Black Yarns Superwash Merino Nylon Sock in Jamberry paired with White for the contrast heel, toe, and cuff: pattern entirely from my own head, made for Jason, immediately claimed by Jason.

The floor photo is all I've got and honestly I think that tells the whole story better than any styled shoot ever could.

Back to School season has me thinking about how far I've come.

These are my Recycled Socks No. 1: and the story starts in 2005 with one of the very first pairs of socks I ever knit. They never quite fit right, but I was so incredibly proud of them. I wore them anyway, loved them anyway, and somehow they lasted twenty years.

When they got beyond darning, I couldn't just throw them away. So I unraveled them, salvaged what I could, and gave that yarn a second life... mixed with new Knit Picks Risata (which is incredible for reinforcing heels and toes, by the way) and Plymouth Happy Feet. Same yarn, new skills, new socks that actually fit.

That's the real back to school lesson: the things you make when you're just starting out aren't failures. They're the foundation.

Me: I'll use up some scraps and make a sensible sock.

Also me: "maximum effort"

These are my Chaotic Neutral Scrappy Socks: US 0 needles, Regia 4-ply as the base, every scrap I could find including a hand dyed sock blank remnant, and a diagonal stitch straight out of my own head. No pattern. No plan. Just pure chaotic god energy and a complete inability to be contained by the concept of a "yarn diet."

I'm not the villain of any story. I'm just the most interesting character...

Everyone starts somewhere: even with colorwork.

Nearly 30 years into this knitting journey and I still remember the first time I picked up a second color and thought how hard can this be? Spoiler: not as hard as you think.

If you've been knitting for a while and colorwork feels like the next scary mountain to climb, can I suggest starting with two-color striping? No floats. No charts. Just two yarns, clean stripe transitions, and the very satisfying moment when you realize you've been doing colorwork all along.

These Arrakis socks are a perfect example: that crisp forest green against soft grey is bold and striking, but the technique is approachable enough for someone just dipping their toes into working with more than one color.

July was an absolute blur, y’all. My partner had a total knee replacement, my own health had its usual ups and downs, work didn’t slow down for any of it, and somewhere in the middle of all that chaos we decided it was the perfect time to bring home a new puppy (spoiler: there is no perfect time, we just did it anyway).

Needless to say, the needles didn’t move as fast as I wanted them to this month. But there was still yarn happening in the cracks between hospital visits and puppy zoomies, and these little purple shorty ankle socks got FINISHED. I’m honestly so happy with how they turned out even if the photo doesn’t do them justice.

I also have two well worn and well loved pairs of socks from 2005, yes, they’re old enough to legally drink in America at this point, that are finally beyond repair. I’m taking them apart to salvage what yarn I can and turn it into something new. Watch for those posts soon, it feels like a proper send off for socks that have earned their retirement.

There’s a whole pile of other WIPs waiting in the wings too, so more finished projects coming soon. Thanks for sticking around through the chaotic months. Sometimes life just doesn’t leave much room for anything else, and that’s okay.

As promised: better photos of my finished Köynnös Socks. The vine lace really comes to life once they’re on, and I couldn’t resist a little photoshoot out by my garden.

This was such a joy to test knit, light, airy, and perfect for summer.
