The fourth annual 2011 New England Book Festival was held recently at the Omni Parker House Hotel in downtown Boston. Over one hundred authors and guests were in attendance. Twenty-seven awards in thirteen categories were presented to those authors in attendance from various parts of the northeast and Canada. Only five percent of books entered from around the world received recognition including The Last Fling by John B. Cummings, Jr. from Westport whose book has been highly acclaimed. Honorees were told that they represent the best of what the current book publishing has to offer.

There were sixteen categories in which hundreds of entries were judged. Submitted works were judged by a panel of industry experts including authors, publishers, journalists and agents using the following criteria: 1) general excellence and the author's passion for telling a good story. 2) the potential of the work to reach a wider audience.

“The Last Fling” tells of life in the mid-20th century in Westport and highlights stories from Hurricane Carol in 1954. It is a fascinating tale of a life-altering event of courage, terror and survival. The book was cited in the General Non-Fiction classification.
Ann Hood, author of the best selling books, The Red Thread and The Knitting Circle calls Cummings’ book “wistful and charming.”

This book can be purchased at local bookstores and gift shops in Greater Fall River or directly from the author at www.thelastfling.net
