Today, the tree called to me again. This isn't the first fairy ladder I’ve built among these branches, and I have a feeling it won’t be the last.
As I gathered each stick, I turned them into prayers for protection. I asked that abuse never find a home with my sons—that they are neither the ones hurting others nor the ones being hurt. I asked the same for my grandchildren: a cycle of safety, kindness, and peace.
I prayed for our strength, both physical and financial. I asked for enough to meet our responsibilities and perhaps a little extra, so we might have the grace to help others.
I asked for the clarity to stay mentally sharp and the courage to remain emotionally available.
It often feels heavy to ask for more when I have already been given so much. Yet, as I tucked each branch into place, I focused on gratitude.
For every stick, I named someone I love and whispered something I cherish about them. I gave thanks for the life I’ve helped create, for my partner who supports my every step, and for the simple dignity of being able to provide for ourselves.
I gave thanks for the experiences that have shaped me, and for the incredible couples I’ve had the honor to work with. I asked for myself, and for those I love, building a ladder of hope one branch at a time.
