Today marks 10 years of self-employment!

Along with my years at Bennett Innovations, I’ve spent 28 years writing commissioned music in every flavor imaginable — heart-warming, tear jerking, motivating, frightening, quirky. Classical to jazz, heavy metal to hee haw country to rap… and anything that lets me sneak in an analog synth or two… or twenty.

It’s been a life of insane deadlines and the occasional scary lull, but I wouldn’t trade it. And I still get a charge when I hear one of my jingles or see a spot I scored on the airwaves.

Here’s a collage of some of my favorite custom music and sound design projects from the last decade. ‘Looking forward to the next one — this gig is way too much fun to ever retire!

Here's a fun little TV spot I did sound design & music for. While the spot was being shot (by Bennett Innovations), a lighting guy was flashing colored lights to simulate a game being played. Those flashes gave me cues to hit with whatever kind of game sound effects I thought appropriate. I love the kid's line "get wrecked you piece of junk!". (In real life, I'm guessing he would've been a little more colorful if he wasn't playing the game with his dad!).

Is "Throwback Thursday" still a thing? 'Hope so, 'cause I just saw this for the first time recently & had to share. I did this jingle for Wrede Rocks & Mulch-Lafayette back in 2006. They made a music video from it that I never knew about. Fun stuff! Featuring the awesome vocal stylings of Bob Bailey. Enjoy:

One business. 3 very different divisions: Blue Duck Lawn Care, Blue Duck Pest Control & Blue Duck Christmas Lights. “I need a jingle!” Challenge accepted!

🎶 Faith Marie crushed the “frustrated homeowner,” while Nick Lemmo went full Tom Jones as “Mr. Quackers,” the Blue Duck tech. And yep… pest control might be the most fun topic to ever write lyrics about! All three jingles, back-to-back. Enjoy:

Now that I’ve retired from being a Church Music Director (my “other full-time job” as I used to call it), I’m left with years of custom arrangements of Christmas tunes sitting on a hard drive that never got past the demo stage. They were only developed far enough to get an idea across to the Praise Team. So… seemed like a good opportunity to try out AI as a collaborative tool. My arrangement, my chord changes & melodic deviations. AI vocals (based on input from my original demo) and AI sax, guitar & percussion. My drums, bass & keys. Interesting, promising & frightening all wrapped up in one. Your thoughts welcome…

A little throwback Thursday for anyone with a minute and a half to kill. This is a promo video for my former employer that I did custom music & sound design for…. Eleven years ago. It still holds up as a pretty cool demo! I’ll try not to break my arm patting myself on the back, but I think this is a nice display of how sound design can bring visuals to life and how music can glue a collage of different visuals into a single, cohesive piece. Enjoy.

...And my latest jingle just dropped. This one for Capital Heating, Cooling & Electric. We went for an Americana feel on this with a bit of Country flavorings. Enlisted the awesome vocal stylings of Mimi Mapes along with some fine pickin' by Austin Johnson and sweet fiddlin' by Anna Hodge. Hopefully this hot track will help keep the good folks of Wisconsin warm! Give the jingle a listen:
