The Banjo Apocalypse Crinoline Troubadours

The Banjo Apocalypse Crinoline Troubadours The Banjo Apocalypse Crinoline Troubadours are friends, writers, performers, and musicians who’ve banded together to share their work with the world. C.S.E.

Scattered across the globe, they do not so much travel together as spontaneously occur. Whenever two or more are gathered, you can be sure of a well-dressed apocalypse. Cooney grew up in a desert with a pack of brothers and a plastic tub of dress-up clothes. Much later, she and her wardrobe migrated to Chicago for college, where she received her degree in Fiction Writing with a minor in Theater. N

ow a resident of Rhode Island, her fiction and poetry can be found in APEX, SUBTERRANEAN, STRANGE HORIZONS, CLOCKWORK PHOENIX 3, GOBLIN FRUIT, MYTHIC DELIRIUM, and other publications. She received the 2009 Rhysling award for her poem “Song for an Ancient City,” and has received a Nebula nomination for “The Green Book,” a short story originally published in the Arab/Muslim issue of APEX magazine. Her work has appeared in many online and print publications, including STRANGE HORIZONS, WEIRD TALES, and IDEOMANCER. Caitlyn Paxson has pursued studies in writing, folklore, and performance in the United States, Canada, England, Scotland and France. She is the Managing Artistic Director of the Ottawa StoryTellers, and is happy to have a career firmly rooted in story after a series of odd jobs that include fiber arts consultant, legal document and poetry transcriber, and shepherdess. She is the assistant editor of GOBLIN FRUIT, plays the harp, and is learning to play the banjo. Her work has appeared in SHIMMER, CABINET DES FEES, MYTHIC DELIRIUM, and other publications.

I've been dreaming and dreaming of "Ballads from a Distant Star."

I have a friend working in the Artist Resource Center at her university, and asked her to keep an eye out for grants. Key words "feminist" "folk" "international" "music" "musical theatre" "genre" "women artists" "New York artists," etc.

I would love, love, LOVE to find a grant that would allow Amal El-Mohtar and Caitlyn Paxson and me to make an album--in a studio, with musicians--and then throw a party for it, and then embark on a mini-tour, and all of us be COMPENSATED for it, because, like, that would be our JOB.

Well, part of our jobs. Our many jobs.

Caitlyn Paxson of BACT is visiting C. S. E. Cooney of the same in Queens, NYC. We, along with artist Betsie Withey and poet/writer Jessica Wick, visited The Cloisters.

But look at this woman. CAITLYN, MAN! Don't you want to write songs about her? And also about that little guy chewing a spear. I definitely want to write a song about him. And maybe the unicorn hunt tapestries in general...

I got to sing this a ca****la at Boskone this year--but it's more fun with the girls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ...

The Apocalypse Gals of BACT miss each other DREADFULLY! We now live in Toronto, Ottawa, and Rhode Island, and don't really know when we'll get to sing together again. SOMEDAY, I HOPE!

In the meantime, 'Lypsy Ladies Amal El-Mohtar and C. S. E. Cooney will reunite to sing together (with Amal reciting her poem "Pieces") at Medusa Mia! A Mythtacular Night of Story and Song!

Spread the word, and come if you can! If you can't, we hope, somehow, to get a video recording to you!

Facebook keeps telling me our fans haven't heard from us in a while. Well, let's hear from our fans!!!

Which old time-y ballads do you like best? Which songs might you like to see re-sung in a storyworld about galactic diaspora, abduction to a generation star-ark, assimilation and integration on an alien planet, forced labor in mines filled with wonders, monstrous lovers, strange babes, that sort of thing?

Double points if you write your own in the comments. Tee hee.

The Banjo Apocalypse Crinoline Troubadours shot some pretty fantastic (also some very goofy) footage today in the Victorian Strolling Park.

For our music video. For Rose Lemberg.

As beautiful as this video is going to be, I have a feeling the blooper reel is what is going to make us famous.

Our glorious Amal El-Mohtar just contributed her FIRST Distant Star Ballad to the oeuvre!!! And Caitlyn Paxson, who is magic, set it to harp!

Our collection slowly grows…
