NOW YOU KNOW!

The History Alive Project Board has asked me, as HAP President, to answer a question that our Board members as well as myself have been getting asked several times. The question is why most of the Norwegian heritage groups in the area have been chosen and that HAP is not participating in the "Taste of Norway" event being held at the Country C**n Prairie Lutheran Church?

The answer to those who have asked and to those that were wondering, is that History Alive Project was not invited to participate by the organizers.

History Alive Project is pleased that many of you have asked but that is the answer.

NOW YOU KNOW!

Yesterday, September 4, History Alive Project welcomed the new WHS freshmen class students to the History Hus at 218 North Main Street, Westby. This is a special class as many of the students are 14 years old and this is the 14th year that HAP has worked with and in the School District. At the end of the 2026-27 school year, all these freshmen students will have a greater knowledge of the history of the Westby, C**n Valley, Chaseburg areas and the reasons that the Norwegian ancestors came to these areas.

History Alive Project looks forward to sharing dynamic and age-appropriate lessons each month with these students. HAP feels this is a very good age for youth to start learning the history of the area that they live in.

If you wish to tour the History Hus yourself and learn more about this area's history, call (608-634-3034) or email ([email protected]). A HAP member would love to share our collections with you; the coffee pot will be on!

NOW YOU KNOW!

This is an interesting photo of a sign that once was located in C**n Valley. Do you know where it was located? Was there a Mr. Fink? Mrs. Fink?

Take a look at the community below Dubuque. Interesting that it was written in after the sign was made. Are the mileage numbers fairly accurate?

NOW YOU KNOW1

Looking through some of the History Alive Project yearbooks from Westby High School, HAP found this interesting page. Our yearbook collection is quite complete, starting with the 1914 very first WHS Annual. Note that this page below is but five years after that first one. The Deportment section is very funny! HAP likes the last paragraph for its humor!

97 years later, how would all new freshmen look at this? Would their answers be the same as the 1919 freshmen?

Would today's 9th graders even know what a clothes pin or what a Morris chair looks like? Could they tell us what a manicure set is? Have any even used a typewriter?

If you have a 9th grader or know of one that is starting high school this week, why not ask him/her the above questions?

NOW YOU KNOW!

With Tuesday, September 1, as the beginning of a new school year in Westby WI, History Alive Project and many of its followers would LOVE TO HEAR what you or your child was thinking about before that first day, that you or they were entering the elementary, middle school, high school or even college.

Were you a little apprehensive? Darn scared? What do you remember about that first day? Was that first day on a school bus? If you came from a one-room school, now you were entering high school for the first time; what were your thoughts? If leaving high school and entering college and maybe away from home the first time, were you concerned about what was ahead for you?

Please share this and describe what your feelings were at this new adventure that you were beginning! HAP knows that you have stories!
