🤩 My new favorite way to display earrings! I drew these little lovelies straight onto a canvas, put the canvas on an easel and poked holes with the earring wires. LOVE.

(I also made all of the earrings)

I’ve been quietly watching the evolving Discourse around collage and mixed media artists using pages from books and magazines to make their art… something artists have been doing for a century (shout out to Picasso and Braque).

And it’s clear some folks have big (negative) feelings about physical print media being used for art making. Is it nostalgia? Is it fear our human Archive is being destroyed? Is it the idea of holding something whole in your hands?

Like many, I was viscerally effected by the videos of books being sliced and processed for AI extractions. I grew up in a bookstore with my mother and my father was a writer. Our family library rivals the libraries of some towns. Books are bread for my family.

But being upset about print media used by artists is not the same thing as what AI companies are doing. Artists moved by written words or photographs or illustrations, to cut up and rearrange and recontextualize to tell a new story, to create new expression and understanding… this is the work of an artist. We should make art with whatever so moves us. Just as a jewelry maker breaks porcelain to create a ring or pendant. Or a mosaic artist that breaks tile for the larger work.

Here I’m sharing a handful of books I purchased for a few dollars… which I will personally be cutting up and providing to patrons, as well as using for my own art. I’m so excited by what will come from this.

Do you have thoughts on all of this? Feel free to continue the conversation here if you’re so moved.

FREE collage and junk journaling materials totally relevant to your vacation?! Yes! Hit up the local Visitor’s Center for brochures and magazines with gorgeous photos, funky maps, text to cut up, and heaps of ephemera!

Hi Craft friends… here’s your reminder that the studio is closed Sat Aug 15 (today) through Tues Aug 25. It’s family vacation on the Cape, then setting up for our market opening and PARTY at the end of the month! I’ll still be sharing some pics and videos here as inspiration hits.

Many thanks to the Craftlab members who support the space even when it’s closed. In gratitude, I have crafty surprises for you when I return. 🎁💝🎁

Love and Lobstah,
Lián
