Song #1
Artist: Genesis
Title: You Might Recall (it might also be the only one - or maybe I'll do a random song every day - who knows...)
Album: Abacab B-Side
Times Played Live: Sadly never performed by the band

This is an interesting Genesis song and probably not the one anyone might guess would be the first one I am writing about. It was originally written during the Abacab sessions but ended up not making the final cut for the album. The song was released on a 3 song single called 3X3 in 1982 along with Paperlate and Me and Virgil and also as the b-side of the Paperlate single. I know it’s confusing. To confuse things even further the 3X3 single was only released in the UK but the songs did appear on the fourth side of their live album Three Sides Live in 1982 along with two b sides from the Duke album (Evidence of Autumn and Open Door). Anyway You Might Recall is considered by many fans to be a song that really should have been included on the Abacab album…and most feel it should have replaced Whodunnit?. For good reason as well, as it is a pretty awesome song. There is a lightness and bounce to it that is infectious. The simple three note ascending and descending keyboard motif to begin with, along with Phil Collins’ loose drumming style immediately sets the vibe. Tony plays an electric piano on this track which I love the sound of. It is almost Supertramp sounding. Mike Rutherford’s guitar riff in the chorus is light and catchy and wonderful. He doesn’t have a huge number of lead riffs that stand out to me but this one is definitely one of my favourites. Phil’s vocals are also excellent, weaving all over his range and executed with confidence and intensity as the song builds from the verses to the choruses. There is something deeply infectious about this tune. It all sounds so very light and fresh, yet is set to a fairly contemplative reflective backward looking and not particularly happy lyric with lines like "Cause there was a time I thought I'd be the one Who'd leave and start again” and "my hopes are as the leaves upon the water Just sunk in the night”. I’m not sure who wrote the lyrics but it sounds very much like Phil from that era - much of the lyrics he wrote at this time were related to the marital troubles he was having with his first wife - which fueled his first solo album Face Value just a year prior and Hello I Must Be Going a year after this was written.

Magical Musical Moments:
1. Phil’s drums at the beginning through the intro and 2:04-2:22
2. Mike’s guitar riff in the verses at 1:00, 2:44
3. Double track vocals “you might recall” at 1:25, 4:33
4. The triple drum hit at 2:53 - I love little flourishes like this that Phil drops into songs
5. Phil’s entire vocal delivery on this song is amazing.

Overall You Might Recall has a series of highly infectious moments that repeat and build in a wonderfully perfect way. It would have been an amazing addition to the Abacab album in my opinion.

Lyrics:
What was it you said to me
Back in the days when things looked fine
'Bout how we would be together
Until we left the earth behind
Oh, it's funny how things can change
Cause there was a time I thought I'd be the one
Who'd leave and start again
But now I'd stay forever
Ooh my hopes are as the leaves upon the water
Just sunk in the night
And though I know you couldn't care, you oughtta
Ah, the end of a life
Or maybe when you're older, and you're thinking back
You might recall
Now did I act carefully, did I do right?
Or were we meant to be, all of our lives
In love and harmony, all of our lives?
So now, take my hand
Come, hold me closely
As near as you can
Believing all that we could be
And all that we have been
And all that we are
Everyday seems summertime
The river flow with wine
Ooh when you were here with me
I wish we'd stayed that way forever
Oh my hopes are as the leaves upon the water
Just sunk in the night
And though I know you couldn't care, you oughtta
Ah, the end of a life
Or maybe when you're older, and you're thinking back
Well you might recall
Now did I act carefully, did I do right?
Or were we meant to be, all of our lives
In love and harmony, all of our lives?
So now, take my hand
Come, hold me closely
As near as you can
Believing all that we could be
And all that we have been
And all that we are
Oh my hopes were as the leaves upon the water
Ah, sunk in the night
And though I know you couldn't care, you oughtta
Oh, the end of a life
And maybe when you're older, and you're thinking back
Oh, you might recall
Now did I act carefully, did I do right?
Or were we meant to be, all of our lives
In love and harmony, all of our lives?
So now, take my hand
Come, hold me closely
As near as you can
Believing all that we could be
And all that we have been
And all that we are

The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir FIRST SHOW - Concert Hall 1985 I From The Archives

This is the original VHS footage of The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir playing their first proper show at the High School Battle Of The Bands in 1985 - probably grade 11 for most of them. It is pretty grainy due to age and original quality of the VHS tape. The band features Chris Brown (keys/vocals), Kate Fenner (vocals), Jason Mercer (bass), Peter Mercier (guitar), Chris Miller (guitar), Andrew Whitman (sermonizing/vocals), Graham King (drums), Andrew MacEacran (percussion), Brian Figaro (guitar) Derek Sinclair (sax/flute/vocals), ? (trumpet), Colin Dunbar (dancing), Mike Rosenitsch (dancing). What is amazing is that the Bourbons were amazing live from show number one onward. There is a reason many people consider them to be the best live band they’ve ever seen.

Don't Talk Dance CBC Newsworld I From The Archives
This is a short piece which was originally put together and provided to me by Justin Smallbridge. Don't Talk Dance was a joke that got out of hand - They were highly entertaining for the few shows they did and produced one super fun album of zaniness. The core of the group was Chris Brown (then of The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir), Gordie Johnson from Big Sugar and Tyler Stewart of Ba*****ed Ladies, along with a host of guests.

The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir Nov 30 1991 Lee's Palace I From The Archives
This would have been just after the release of the Put Your Head On/As Right As They Want To Be single and prior to Superior Cackling Hen. Nice mix of songs from Sister Anthony as well as SCH songs, an early version of Lose The Apple that wouldn't be recorded until the Shyfolk album. Plus a bunch of covers and songs that weren't recorded such as Find It Out, On To Me, We Let Ourselves Go, S***k The Dog and Stand Out. We Got Time was a Bob Wiseman song who produced the Put Your Head On single.

Today’s “I fu***ng love this song” entry is Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie. I know there are many duets with both singers being men but I can’t really think of any off the top of my head other than this song (edit I guess the Beatles did a few :))That’s not why I picked it though. I’m highlighting it because it is probably my all time favourite single ever released. Every single aspect of this song is perfection to me. The dual vocals are incredible. Bowie’s hyper desperate delivery is one thing but Freddy Mercury’s vocal prowess is utterly unbelievable in every way including that note. The two of them compliment each other incredibly well both in their trade off of lyrics as well as timber of voice. The music is succinct yet richly diverse from moment to moment. The finger snaps, the sublime bridge, the lyrics...everything about it is truly golden. I have heard this song a million times and never once tired of it. It is musical perfection in my books. Amazingly they only ever did this one song together but how could they ever top it?

Today’s “I fu***ng love this song” entry is Secret World by Peter Gabriel. I know many know I’m a huge Peter Gabriel and Genesis fan and many would think I’d post Biko from his third solo album but this one came up in my mix and well...it is such a beautiful song. I love how he uses his voice so dynamically to elevate the intensity of the song despite the music being fairly consistent for the first half. Wonderful beat and music creating a perfect atmosphere. Then the bass is cranked and the song takes a more heightened though subtle intensity. Lots and lots of space for the song to breathe. I’ve seen Peter Gabriel on the So tour, Us, Up and Scratch My Back tours. The Us tour was probably my favourite as it was such an incredible live production (though So and Up were pretty amazing as well).

Today's "I fu***ng love this song" entry is Put Your Head On by The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir.

This song was produced by Bob Wiseman following their Sister Anthony cassette in 1990. Recorded at Metalworks Studio in 1991 it ended up being used in the soundtrack of the Bruce McDonald film Highway 61. The single was originally released with the b-side As Right As They Want To Be. On the 1985-1995 compilation CD a live version of ARATWTB was included in place of the studio version. The video is the same version that is already up online but I've replaced the audio with a proper clean track for clarity.

I was watching Strombo on Instagram live last night and his guest was Matt McKechnie aka Graven. I had not heard him before but his demeanour and candour struck me as calmingly sincere. I ended up looking him up and discovered he is from Ottawa and has a ton of albums. I randomly listened to a few songs and was really impressed. This is Legend of You from his most recent album Years. I’d love to hear if others have heard of him and what to recommend. Lots to catch up on. I love Random moments of musical inspiration.
