'The Potato Eaters' was Van Gogh's depiction of the harsh reality of country life. The piece was one of his first major paintings and he wanted to show that they "have tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish... that they have honestly earned their food".

He gained a lot of criticism for the dark colors used and countless composition mistakes. Vincent didn't care - the message of the painting was more important to him than perfection or technical precision. These days, 'Potato Eaters' is one of his most famous works.
